Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

New to site and good home needed for 2 Bala sharks

Hi there,

I'm brand new to this site and to be honest my main reason for joining at the moment is because I am looking for a good home for my 2 Bala sharks. I have a small tank, much too small for them I now realise. I stupidly bought them on impulse and was assured by the person in the fish shop that my tank would be fine for them. I have had them for a while and things were fine to start with but now as they have grown they have become more and more jumpy and skittish which I now know is in their nature anyway but which I feel is made much worse because of the lack of space.

The last thing I want is to have unhappy fish and I am very annoyed with myself for putting them in this situation in the first place so I would love if there was someone with a lovely big tank that could accommodate their needs. I would dearly love to buy a bigger tank myself but I just can't afford to.

I live in the Tipperary/Limerick area, about half way between Nenagh and Limerick so if there was someone near enough to me that would be even better.

I'm probably posting this in the wrong place also so apologies in advance for that!

If anyone has any questions please fire away.

There is a local pub which has two quite large tanks so I'm going to chance it and call in there tomorrow evening to ask them if they might want them. So on the off chance they do if anyone else is interested can you please contact me as soon as possible.

Cheers,
Noreen

Noreen,
Firstly welcome to the Forum.
You would appear to be very thoughtful towards your fish, you are correct of course. Bala Sharks really do need a large tank and often suffer from being kept in a smaller one.

Your plan to re-home them is a sound one - could you not fetch them back to the shop you bought them from to exchange for more appropriate-to-your-tank sized fish?

Otherwise, try to Pub option...but make sure the fish they might already have would accept the Sharks as suitable tank-mates.

If all that fails send me a Personal Message through the Forum and I'll take them off your hands, I'm not a million miles from you.

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I could have been more thoughtful as I've had them for a while now before realising the tank issue so I'm doubtful that the shop would want to take them back now. I guess I could try anyway. To be honest I would just prefer if they went to someone that would look after them. I'm not exactly suggesting the shop wouldn't but I would be afraid they might sell them on again to someone with a tank too small for them.

I'm hoping to try the pub this evening. I'm not certain what fish they have in their tanks but I'm hoping that whoever looks after them will know if my two will get on with the rest. Which fish would definitely not be compatible with them?

So if the pub turns me down I will definitely be in touch John! Thanks.

Update:

After John's suggestion re returning them to the shop where I bought them I happened to be near Petmania on the Ennis Rd at lunch time so I popped in to ask them if they would take them. Now I must stress this is not where I bought them. Anyway they will take them and will give me some fish in exchange. I'm not overly bothered about getting more fish for them. I would rather just be sure they will be looked after. Does anyone have any opinions on Petmania? I have never bought fish there myself.

I will still call to that local pub this evening to ask them also. That would be the ideal solution really as I could visit them then. :) Am I daft or what!?!?

Not at all daft,
This shows an admirable dedication to the fish...a dedication more would be well advised to bear in mind!!!

I'll send a PM re the shop you mention.

As to companions they really are pretty easy-going fish which rarely bother anything which they cannot get into their mouths. So you should bear that in mind when visiting the Pub tonight, also - at the opposite end of the scale - there shouldn't be anything already in the tank which would either bully them (even though they can 'shift' and so be less of a target) or even worse...eat them!

Let the Forum know the existing fish in the Pub tanks, if possible, and someone will be able to better advise you then. You might also take note of the actual tank sizes.

Just a quick update! My Bala's were successfully re-homed last night in the local pub's largest fish tank. It's a whopping 5 x 3 x 2 approx. - virtually a hotel compared to where they were and only a few other fish in it with them.

Catching them proved tricky enough and I thought the shock of it would be the end of them.. that or our jack russell waiting beside the tank for one of them to jump straight out and onto the floor! ;)
Thankfully that didn't happen and a few minutes after being released into their new home they were swimming around and investigating their surroundings while their new tank mates investigated them! I have a good feeling that this will work out and best of all I can pop in every now and then to see them.

So thanks to everyone for the help and advice!

Next job now is to get some more fish for my own tank. More suitable ones this time though!!!
