Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

The Herpetological Society of Ireland (H.S.I.) will be holding a “Show and Tell…and More” event on

Sunday 16th October 2011

At

Rockbrook Park School, Rathfarnham, Dublin.

This is part 2 of our event that we held in March of 2011, but will have a slightly different theme.

The H.S.I. asked its members and members of some forums to make suggestions on possible realistic activities that they would like to have.

From those and others, a schedule of events will be collated.

At the last Show and Tell event, we invited the ITFS to attend with a stand: the ITFS stand got some very good reviews from the reptile/amphibian keeping community.

There have been requests from our members and the H.S.I. committee that the October event will also have some fish representation.

So, this is a possible date for the diary. I will post up more details as they become finalised.

This is interesting Ian,
the last one was excellent so here's hoping the part 2 will be even better.

Cheers. The last one (which was actually the first we'd done of that thing) was a really good success.

This one had been in the planning for ages, but there were delays in having the venue confirmed (hence, not much notice to do what had originally been planned.....a 2-day event).

The actual venue itself is very important in all this, and a pub would not necessarily be the right choice.

I am hoping that I would be allowed to bring along a few Mudskippers (maybe) or other amphibious fish, or maybe event dart frogs.

Now, if I were able to exploit total freedom of being a chairperson, then I might even bring along my guitar and amp and do a full extended concert version of Pink Floyds "Comfortably Numb" as a side show. !! But alas, that would be pushing ones remit :)

I thought the idea was to encourage people to attend, not put them off!

(Only kidding, of course...although I could bring my Bass - any drummers and keyboard players out there?).

Best of luck Ian for the event.
I can assure anyone thinking of going that the previous one was excellent so this will be well worth the trip.

Cheers John.

A bit of an update on some of the short talks/special spotlight that will be given during the day:
Some of the speakers are by younger members, so it would be good to see some support for their talks.

As a note, without giving names away, at least 3 people on this list are members of this forum and members of the ITFS (I suspect a 4th person is also a member on this forum, but I know if definitely a member of the other fish keeping forum)

(not in any particular order)

1. Keeping and Maintaining large Constrictors in Captivity

2. Tarantulas as pets - a Woman's Story

3. Sexing Tarantulas and Tarantula Natural History

4. A Quick Guide to Field Herping

5. Herpetology Conservation Work in India

6. Captive Husbandry of Iguanas and the use of "Free Roaming"

7. Husbandry of African Clawed Frogs

8. Air Breathing Fish

9. Captive Care of Australian Water Dragons

10. Herpetoculture- a Young Keepers Perspective

There may also be an additional talk on
The Abandonment of Turtles into Irish Waterways

These talks will be scheduled over the course of the entire the day. A schedule will be posted in the near future.
Some of these talks will feature demonstrations with animals or the use of animals as props

As you can see it's going to be quite a day :D

Many thanks for those who turned up, and who brought animals to the Show and Tell.

It was a good day with some very good talks on a wide range of subjects.
