Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have just heard that Phil passed away on Saturday evening. Phil has been ill for some time, but was doing well and made it to a few recent meetings. Phil will be remembered by everyone who met him over the many years he was involved with the ITFS and other Dublin clubs in years gone by for his love of the hobby and his great character. He will be sadly missed.

Really very saddened to hear this,i've had the pleasure of having Phil down in my house on a good few occasions, the last time quite recently when he was in top form,so i'm really taken a back by this news!!
He always had a few words to say about my tanks but he was so subtle in his words that it would be hours after he left before i'd realise he had just given me a little piece of great advise....Absolute Gentleman.....RIP Phil

Even though Phil was ill for a while i dont think anyone expected the worst.

Phil was always good for a joke and a laugh.
He should be remembered for his contrabution to the clubs, the federation and the fish shows he would help organise and judge.
A gentleman that will be sadly missed in and out of the hobby.

I was quite shocked to hear that Phil has passed away. I know that he was having treatment but it all seemed to be going well. He was very positive and in good form.

He was the steady hand in the club and always the voice of reason especially when we were planning shows. He would away think of the practical things like what matches were on that weekend...he got behind the newer members in the club and helped out hugely when it came to advice and with the judging for shows. He encouraged us in the beginning to take a chance and stage a show which he participated in and trusted us to do a good job.

He was also involved in getting the Irish Federation back on its feet and guided us all in the right direction. Both Phil and Derek put a lot of effort into training new judges and in preparing them for their exams.

I am so sad that we wont see him anymore. My sympathies to Dierdre and the rest of Phils family. We will miss you phil.

I received this email back from Joe Nethersel from the FBAS in England. We have attended the show in Hayling there over the years and Phil had many friends scattered throughout the clubs in the UK. I thought it was a nice mail.

Dear Nessa

Thank you for letting me know about the death of Phil Kearney. When I met him at the Festivals that he attended he was always very polite and friendly. I an sure that he will be sadly missed by all that knew him.

My sincere sympathy goes out to all his family.

I have passed this information onto our Web site manager Dick Mills, who has posted it on the FBAS website.

Kind Regards

posted on the FBAS site today.

We regret to announce that Phil Kearney from the Irish Tropical Fish Society has passed away.
He was an FBAS Judge, one of the longest serving members of the Club and its Treasurer for many years.
UK Fishkeepers would have met him at the FBAS Festivals of Fishkeeping which he attended for a good many years. He was a brilliant Club man, an avid fishkeeper and had many friends spread throughout all the Clubs in the UK.
He was also a gentleman and we will miss him. We are devastated as a Club and as his friends.
We are saddened by his passing, but he will be long remembered by those of us who knew him.
Nessa Duffy, ITFS Treasurer
