Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

About the SAS Minutes Thread

Before I go into anything to do with the events of the last couple of days I want to point out that when Anthony started up the Clubs section & requested that we post a record of our minutes, he stipulated that the only thing that was to be posted in that thread was a record of the minutes by the club secretary. It would have been nice if those guidelines were followed. :(

On now to the comments that were made. Did nobody pay close attention to what I wrote? I clearly stated

We decided not to include a forum on the website as it would detract from the community on the ITFS forum.

What we're using to communicate with, here now, is the forum & seeing as the SAS aren't having one, one of the many reasons being especially out of respect I might add, then there is nothing to be worrying about.

The update of the ITFS site occured after our last SAS meeting. So, when we planned to put a few basic articles, or links to, on our site, this function wasn't available here.

We've been putting up posters in an attempt to promote the SAS in our locale & in effect, our homepage will be little more than the same information, albeit wider available.

Holger has posted many times now trying to reassure people what the SAS is about. I'm surprised his blood pressure isn't through the roof in with anger at having to repeat himself so often, especially in one thread. :S

Anthony, going on what I've clarified above & what is written in the minutes, I can't see how you could possibly get the impression that we consider ourselves superior. I'm sorry you thought/think we are, or that anybody else feels that way. However, we can't be the ones to change others thoughts, we're not that gifted or elite after all. ;)

You mentioned you had recieved feedback & didn't want to go into it. All I can say is that if you had asked Holger directly, where he could go into it & without the unfortunate inconvenience of Chinese Whispers, then there is a possibility that your opinion of us would have been higher from the outset.

Kind Regards

Richard

Thanks Richard,
I hope this finally clarifies our position. And yes I do agree that I should have been approached directly if anybody had any issues. So for everybody out there who still has a problem with a SAS website send me a pm or an email (holgerheidt

First of all if you bothered to read my first post I asked was I way off the mark and at the end I also apologised.

Secondly. I mentioned in a later post that Holger had clarified the situation and I locked the thread.
I plan to delete everything except the minutes in a few days.

Thirdly. You know as well as I do that nobody here follows the rules properly. How many times have Darragh and I had to send e-mails, put up announcements/stickies and even ban members.

Finally I have a very high opinion of Holger. Infact I consider him a friend on the forum. He is part of the unholy Trinity
with Sean and I.
Nobody here has a chip on their shoulders and as far as I was
concerned the matter was put to bed.
I cannot believe you are digging up corpses so to speak.
I hope you don`t see the minutes as a way of spying on the
clubs.Everybody here wants to see what is happening
with the clubs. If they like what is going on they might join.
That is the main reason I asked for the minutes to be posted.

The way I see it the 3 clubs are part of this forum.
I will continue to promote and help each club as much as
possible especially the 2 new clubs in taking off.
We can all kill each other at the clubs get together:blink:
but until then lets all get on and strive to make our hobby
the best there is.

Hope this closes the subject again.
Your friend...Anthony;)

Here we go again, allegations, apologies, posts deleted, clarifications, retractions etc etc. we're worse than a bunch of politicians, before anyone posts anything maybe if we asked what would a newbie or forum lurker would think of all this crap? Then if it passes that test, post, otherwise don't bother.

How many potential forum members and ultimately maybe club members get put off by the bickering etc that goes on here. For peace I go and browse elsewhere, my blood pressure rises too often on this site. I have never commented on the various disputes, slagging matches and other \"issues\" that have arisen here, but with two new clubs trying to get off the ground, a great looking new website and the recent success of the show etc. It is time someone says something, before we end up destroying what we are trying to create - a greater fishkeeping following in Ireland, let's face it we have a long way to go, this hobby has seen better days and we need to give it every help possible and not get bogged down in politics, inter club rivalry and childishness.

Ok, people, there is white smoke about the whole issue.
I was talking to Darragh last night and we came to a conclusion that is IMO very satisfactory to everybody.
Each Club, ITFS, Leinster, SAS will get there own page on this website. It wasn't possible on the old site but is possible on the new one.
One of my main critisms of this site was the lack of content, like articles, beginner FAQs, etc. He is now also able to add these now. Of course they will have to be written first and can I asked everybody who is willing to contribute (Richard I am looking at you here)to get in contact with Darragh. I will also be looking for volunteers at the nesxt SAS meeting.
This will hopefully put this matter to rest.
And please let's not have a competition which club has the nicer webpage. Anybody starting it will be throttled by me personally

Holger

Beefheart debate? Hold on, just need to get those shotgun cartridges:evil:
Is there any consensus who writes which article? No point having several people writing the same stuff.
By the way, are we having the meeting in September?

Holger,

I will write up a list of articles that could be written and post it in the news forum later and people can pick an article to write so we can track who has choosen to write an article.

If somebody puts their name against an article, we'll accept that they are the only person writing that article and nobody else will write that article.

Article choice will be on a first come first serverd basis.

Regards

Darragh

Sounds good to me. Will all articles be proof read before they are put on the site?

Holger,

In the new website, there is 3 levels an article has to go through before it is published. They are:-

Author - Writes the article
Editor - Edits articles and ensures they look good, etc
Publisher - Publishes the article to the website

While at the moment, there is only 1 level and that is me, I will eventually be asking people with specialist knowledge in particular areas to take on Editor and Publisher roles.

All users are authors.

Regards
