Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

After much consideration the judges, Derek Doyle and Phil Kearney have selected the winners of the article competition.

The winner of the €100 voucher for Aquatic Village is Johnh, \"A collection of personal fishkeeping (and allied) memories\"

the runner up is Cardnim, \"Constructing a DIY CO2 system with night-time shutoff, pressure safety valve and 100% efficient CO2 reactor\" receives a €50 voucher for Aquatic Village.

These articles will be available on the forum in the next couple of days.

Due to the excellent response and quality of all the articles submitted another prize has been added and the remaining 10 articles will be published for forum members to pick their favourite and the winner will recieve a €50 voucher.

Many thanks to both judges for all their time and effort.

A big thank you to everyone that submitted articles, there was a wide selection covering multiple areas of fishkeeping and I hope everyone enjoys reading them and hopefully learning something new when they are posted.

Well done everyone who submitted an article especially JohnH and Cardnim.
Fair play to Phil and Derek for taking the time to read them all and choose the winners. I'm sure it wasnt easy.
A big thank you to Daragh Owens for coming up with the idea and sponsoring the competition.
I look forward to a good read in the coming days.

Article competition.
I hope everybody enjoys reading the winning entries as much as i did. The standard of submitted articles was excellent and after days of deliberation and discussion we chose the two winning articles. The subject matter was very diverse and there were several potential winners so forum readers have a treat in store over the coming weeks as the other equally excellent articles are posted. Well done and thanks to everyone who entered. My fellow judge Phil Kearney will write with his thoughts soon.
I intend to write a short introduction on each article as they are posted.
\"Such as it is\" by JohnH.
I really enjoyed reading this and it brought back memories of my own early days in fishkeeping. It could be a novel as it is very long and must have taken a huge ammount of time and effort to complete.(well worth the effort) The title is accurate \"a collection of personal fishkeeping (and allied) memories\".

\"Constructing a DIY CO2 system\".
This article was very well presented and illustrated and being somewhat unfamiliar with the subject matter it educated me and was easy enough to follow. I look forward to seeing a follow up article explaining its workings in the tank itself.
I will write a short intro. on the other articles in a day or two.

Cheers for the kind words guys, and thank you very much ChrisM!
Im not sure about the magazine quality though.

To be honest, I had to rush the second half of it and didnt go itno as much detail about the pressure release system, the attachment to the reactor and the actual yeast recipe/maintainence as I would have liked.

I will defiantely remedy that soon though, as I have just upgraded my lighting (thanks to the prize!) and am completely re-scaping the tank with a big order from Greenline.
I'll take piccies as I go and write another wee article with some more info given to the actual running of the CO2 system. :)
