Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Anton Lamboj Presentation

St Aengus Community Centre,
Tymon North,
Tallaght, Dublin 24
(Opposite the National Basketball Arena, just off the M50)

22nd May @ 4pm sharp

Anton will do a presentation on Victorian and West African Cichlids.

This presentation is sponsored by ITFS IMAS & LFKS Clubs

Admission: Free on presentation of a current membership card from one of the sponsoring clubs or €5 at the door.

(Taken from: The Cichlid Fishes of Western Africa by Anton Lamboj)

Anton Lamboj was born 1956 and has been an aquarist since the age of ten. Around 1980, he began to take a special interest in the cichlids of West and Central Africa. This interest eventually led, in 1988, to the beginning of his academic education at the University of Vienna, an undertaking made while continuing to work full-time. He was awarded his Master's degree in 1993 and his Ph.D. in 1997; both works were focused on the systematics of West African cichlids.

In addition to his "day" job, Anton Lamboj has worked as a lecturer at the University of Vienna since 1998. He teaches general biology of fishes, with the biology of perciform fishes as a more specialized goal, as well as instructing on didactics. Additionally, he works on the systematics and evolutionary biology of chromidotilapiine cichlids using morphological and anatomical methods, coupled with ethological studies and molecular methods.

Over the years, Anton Lamboj has made 13 field/collecting trips to Africa. In his works he has collaborated with several leading scientific institutions (e.g., the American Museum of Natural History in New York and the Musée Royal de l'Afrique Central in Tervuren). He has authored over 100 papers (both academic and hobbyist) in six languages, including two books. The above accomplishments, coupled with the numerous presentations he has made in various countries, are indications of his scientific and aquaristic competence when discussing western African cichlids.

NOTES:

This presentation is Saturday – the day BEFORE the show.

For anyone interested in attending but can’t, Anton will be at the show the following day, but there will be NO presentation on the day of the show.

Anton is hoping to bring some Victorian Cichlids, he is looking for experienced breeders to take part in a breeding program to protect these fish. Anton may have some West African cichlids for sale, more details nearer the date of the presentation.

Anton will be bringing a small number of his book “The Cichlid Fishes of Western Africa” and a new book he has just published for sale on the day.

Anyone attending that who is also showing fish at the show, please bring them along and they can be benched before or after the presentation.

This will be an excellent opportunity to hear one of the foremost experts in the field of both West African and Victorian Cichlids (not to mention countless other fish) and we urge you to try to attend as you probably won't get the chance to hear him again in Ireland (not in the near future anyway).

Thanks Andrew,

If any more Forum regulars would like to join the ITFS please use the form at the bottom of Andrew's post or send him a PM through the Forum.

Membership is very beneficial in several ways - the monthly meetings are always interesting and nearly always have a raffle as well as presentations, occasional Table Shows - and, of course, give you the opportunity to meet Forum regulars and let you put "faces to names" to use an oft-quoted phrase.

And, on top of that you get a membership card which allows you free entry to ITFS functions such as this and, if all that wasn't enough...you can use your card to receive a discount in any Forum Sponsor's shop.

For anyone not accessing the Forum via the Home Page there is now a Poster there giving details of the Show.
This Anton Lamboj Presentation on the Saturday, while not actually mentioned there, is still going ahead.

We just wanted to make this clear to avoid any confusion.

You can attend this and bench your fish at the one visit.

I found an old video of two Pelvicachromis species with fry I posted under an old YouTube account.

"Pelvicachromis taeniatus male and female with fry. Female had to be removed sometime after, the male wanted to do all the minding and was attacking the female.

Followed by shot clip of Pelvicachromis Subocellatus "Matabi" with fry."

These are some of the type of West Africans that Anton will cover in his presentation.

Anton will be bringing some Lake Victorian Cichlids. These will be small and need to be grown on to sex and will be split into groups, they will not be available on the day. He may also be bringing Pundamilia Nyererei Ruti Island which is a stunning, if aggressive, Cichlid from the lake.

He will be bringing some other fish that will be for sale, however numbers are limited (luggage allowance etc.) Likely non-Victorians will possibly be Astatotilapia Flavijosephii which appear not to be very often kept as they do not have either a common name or even a picture on any websites, Anomalochromis Thomasi which is the fairly well-known African Butterfly Cichlid and Pseudocrenilabrus Nicholsi which is a close relative of the fascinating Egyptian Mouthbrooder, but even more colourful. There might be some Benitochromis (uncertain which species). He is also hoping to bring some young 'wild' Bettas: Betta Falx, Betta Edithae Kalimantan and Betta Edithae Sumatra.

Reminder, presentation is at 4pm sharp on SATURDAY (the fish show is on Sunday).

ITFS, LFKS and IMAS members bring your membership cards and admission is free, otherwise admission is €5.

Just a short report on Anton Lamboj's presentation. I wouldn't attempt to summarise the contents - there was just too much.

We delayed the start of the presentation as long as respectfully possible to allow more people to arrive, unfortunately they didn't. We expected many more attendees but just like the Show itself on Sunday the presentation fell victim to the beautiful weather. So after a slightly late start Anton kicked of a presentation on Western African Cichlids. I thought I knew a bit about these, but I don't know squat! He spoke for 90 minutes against a background of fantastic quality photos going through all the Western African genre, showing one or two representative species for each. There was just so much information. I would need to listen to it all again a few times.

After a short break he presented a shorter presentation on the Breeding program for Victorian Lake Cichlids, equally interesting and accompanied by more excellent photos.

There was plenty of time for questions and answers and he was happy to talk to everyone.

He brought some interesting bettas along on the day, they were only young but for sale at €1 each. I was amazed they were not snapped up much quicker. They are not the type of fish you will pick up in your LFS, they all sold eventually. He also had some Thomasi, not sure how much they were or who bought them but the were lovely fish. Anton also brought a lot of young Victorians that need to be grown on before being allocated to people interested in taking part in the breeding program. I understand Tom Brecknell has undertaken to do this and along with Derek will organise the distribution of these rare fish when they are sexable.

Special thanks to Tom and his wife Jo, who looked after and accommodated Anton and his wife over the weekend.

Anton had for sale two for his books at very special prices, the newest of which was literally just of the printing presses. Anton was back for the show on Sunday afternoon and was available to answer any questions and judged the Invert class too.

While it is pity more people did not turn up to meet Anton, I still think the visit and the presentation was a great success. Arranging a world leading expert like that to talk at our show was a great coup for the three clubs sponsoring the visit, ITFS, IMAS, LFKS. Anton did not charge, but we had to cover his flights etc.

If we want to get top quality speakers like Anton for future events we need more people to come out and show support.

Hi Darragh
That would be me....There were 8 Anomalochromis thomasi available for the fantastic price of €1.50.... Bargain...Methinks....:) :)also bear in mind that AFAIK the fish Anton brought were all F1 stock for these prices...:woohoo: I also thought that both the lectures were fantastic and considering that Anton talked for nearly two and a half hours without notes, just shows the amount of knowledge the man carries around in is head.

PS -Thanks to bella for making up my mind on the fish ,and to yourself and acara for the laptop duties during the lectures

I can only echo Daraghs comments. The man was a real gent, and talked enthusiastically, not only on stage, but to anyone at anytime.I personally enjoyed talking with him and his wife.I had wanted his book,The Cichlid Fishes of Western Africa, for some time, and got it at a good price, personally autographed. The other book was co-written,and being 2 days off the press, the other author hadnt even seen it!!
Yes,the fish he bought to the show to sell were lovely, all F1,and very cheap. The Thomasi were 1.50ea,and I know 1 person who got at least half a dozen.I got 2 species of betta, and he has asked me to email him so he can give the gps data for where he collected the parents in Kalimantan last year.
Shane about the turnout, lets hope next time we get stronger support.

always on the lookout for interesting corys.pm me if you know off any!

I agree it was a great presentation with great information on keeping western African Cichlids and Victorians.
You always hear how Victorian Cichlids are headbangers full of aggression but he explained very well how to keep these and how to keep them with other fish with no problems. Also info on breeding and the ideal setup's for the young to survive in the tank's. Priceless information.
A lot of the info was from a hobbyist point of view so it was easy to relate to.
His knowledge seem to have no limit regardless of species.
He was very approachable and would answer any questions thrown at him.

I have to admit i felt embarrassed that more people didn't turn up for this. A couple of us had discussed bringing more people over for talks but it looks like we will have to put that idea on the back burner for a while.

Fair play to Tom and Jo for putting him and his wife up for the time he is over here.

Anyone that got some of his fish or books got a great deal. His latest book was hot of the press and the cover on the new book will be different when it is released so the 20 copies he brought will be the only one's like it.

I bought his latest book at the show. On the way home on Sunday, water leaked from somewhere and the book got the worst of it in the boot.:(

Anton autographed it for me and I couldn't even open the first 20 pages or so. I let it dry out for a couple of days and it's just about salvagable.

He was an absolute gentleman and a fountain of knowledge. I could only say for 45mins of the presentation as it started late and left bowled over by him. Hopefully we'll see him again in the future.

A great weekend in so many ways:) .

Regards,

Ken.

i agree with all the positive comments and would like to add my own thoughts.
Just a bit of background on how we managed to get anton lamboj over for the show.
tom and jo and tim met him when they visited a german fish show last year.
tom kept in touch by email etc and anton offered to come over to give a talk to
any interested clubs. in discussion with the imas, itfs and lfks it was agreed to
try to coincide his visit with the itfs show date and the rest is history.
tom and jo deserve great praise for the effort made to organise the visit and
for collecting anton and his wife from the airport and providing accomodation
meals and transport for the four day visit.
i feel antons visit added great prestige to the show and i am sure we all learned
plenty from the talks and from less formal chats. anton is very approachable and friendly
and was happy to answer questions on a huge range of fishkeeping topics at any time during his visit.
