Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Who is showing fish?

The show is only a little over a week away now. So who is showing fish??

The entry form is here: www.irishfishkeepers.com/docs/entry_form_2010.doc

You need to bring along your fish the evening before the show between 5:30 and 9:30pm. Tanks will be provided, so will water, but it is better if you can bring some of your own tank water so the fish is in water that it is used to.

If you are coming the the Anton Lamboj presentation (details here: www.irishfishkeepers.com/cms/component/o...w/catid,39/id,69354/ ) you can bring along you fish then and it will be benched before OR after the presentation.

You don't have to submit an entry form in advance, however it really helps with organisation if we have an idea of what's coming, what size and quantity of tanks we need for each class etc etc.

Of you need to know anything about showing a fish, ask here or use the contact details on the entry form.

Naturally all fish entered must be in good health and females should not be very gravid. Tupperware boxes are good for transport or get a couple of bags from your friendly LFS. Don't feed fish you intend to show for a couple of days before hand. If they are in a community tank, don't worry the other fish won't mind going hungry for a couple of days for the benefit of their model neighbor, it will do them no harm.

THERE WILL BE A DRAW FOR A PRIZE EXCLUSIVELY FOR PEOPLE THAT HAVE ENTERED FISH - (ONE TICKET PER PERSON, NOT PER ENTRY)

There will be plenty of other raffles and great prizes on the day, but if you enter a fish, you get into an extra one :woohoo:

I hope to be showing a few small fish also, is there somebody I can send an email with a list to.

Can I also get an idea of what size tanks I can use so I know how much water to bring with me?

Thanks in advance

No thankfully they don't broadcast over the internet!! It was a half hour slot and we managed to fill it, it felt like 5 mins, we thought we were getting cut short. We asked for a copy, but it will be a few days.

Great to see people interested in entering fish.

I have to go now, but will reply later about the amount of water to bring Dan.

Oh no - the "Raffle-Bandit" will be there...that's saved me needing to buy a ticket then!
I never saw someone so good at walking up on stage collecting almost every Raffle Prize, shuffling this way and then that way - trying to pretend he was someone else at each trip. I wonder his car wasn't stopped on the M50 going home - (for being grossly overloaded!

Joking, of course - I actually won a prize myself that day! (but only one...all together now - Ahhh).

sending a list of fish intended for benching by pm seems to be a good idea. it would allow the show commitee to get ahead with paperwork and class/tank sizes etc.. maybe daragh will comment on this when he comes online.

Regarding the amount of your own water to bring, it really depends on the fish, but for a guideline, small fairly inactive fish like corys would only need a very small tank, that would go for small livebearers etc, so about three the amount of water you would normally bag the fish in. Cichlids are active and require a larger tank in proportion to their body size so five or six times the amount you would normally bag that fish in would give you some idea.

We have show tanks from 5" x 4" x 5" right up to 3 foot.

There will be heated water available at the show, we will have two batches, low pH and high pH so if you need to top up there won't be a problem.

Sending a PM with a list of entries would be a great help with the paperwork and allocation of tanks. The fish are split into different classes and all fish of the same class are displayed in one section, so having an idea of how many tanks we need for each class would be a great help when laying out the tanks.

If you know the common name, latin name and country of origin that also helps greatly. If you don't it is not a problem we will endeavor to identify it when you arrive, it just slows done the paper work the poor show secretary has to do (me!).

If anyone has any questions, put them here, pm me or platty252 or contact the phone number on the entry form.

Here is a rough idea of how much water will be needed for a few various fish.
Taking in to account size of the fish and how active it is (on it's own).

Small Danio,Rasbora,tetra,killifish,Betta ,corys,etc 3L
Swordtails,Mollies etc 5L
Caeruleus,BN plecos, firemouths,Pearl Gourami, etc 11L
Angelfish 25L

Don't forget there will be water available (heated & treated) to top up tanks if you dont have enough water with you.

at shows in the late eighties early nineties we often had up to 500 exhibits. but at that time there were a dozen or so judges.
also at that time there were 4 shows per year, bangor, belfast, bray and dublin. of course this was before computers and satelite tvs and celtic tigers and people were not always so busy.
still there has been a great move forwards in fishkeeping in the last few years and the recent shows have been a resounding success.

Firstly thank you to everyone that PM'd me with there fish list, it was a great help. Anyone who didn't don't worry you can enter you fish between 5:30 and 9:30pm tomorrow night (Saturday). To speed the process along it would be great if you have the common and latin name for each fish, but if you don't don't worry we will know it or find it.

Just a couple of notes, fish are displayed one fish pair tank, unless you are showing a pair or a breeders group which is 6 fish.

Don't feed your show fish anymore today or tomorrow, it will be better for the fish and the tanks will be more presentable too.

All fish are displayed in bare tanks, no gravel or plants are allowed.

For the invert category, you can bring a bit of plant for shrimps to cling on to if you wish.

Debenching is at 6pm Sunday evening.

The show is open to the public 1-6pm Sunday and the hall will be open from 3:30pm for Anton Lamboj presentation on Saturday to 9:30pm when benching finishes. Only show officials and volunteers will be able to gain access outside these times. During judging which is 8am - 1pm Sunday, only judges will have access to the hall.

Looking forward to seeing you all and all your fish, snails, shrimp, crabs, frogs, etc.....

Nearly there now....

Daragh

PS. We have a good few entries, but still need more, a few classes are very empty looking, so bring along your fish, you might be surprised what can win a prize! Also remember that every person entering fish goes into a special draw!

And finally when you are thinking "I have nothing to show", you have, you are not looking for the most stunning fish in the tank, you are looking for a very good example of that particular fish. When judging you are not judging a female guppy against an angel fish! All fish are catgorised and scored against similar type fish and what that particular species should look like.

I have a million things still to be done before an early start tomorrow, but it is easier to sit here and essentially bump this back to the top for anyone that has not read all the info I posted a couple of posts back and to say to anyone who is thinking of showing a fish or a dozen fish, but have not made up their minds, it is not too late and you wont regard it, so bag them up tomorrow and come along between 5:30 and 9:30pm.

See ye all tomorrow and or Sunday.

Seriously folks,it might surprise you just how well your fish will do.It's not all about having a big, macho fish,a small barb could win 'Best in Show' quite easily.
As Daragh has said, put it in a bag,put a few litres of tank water in a bottle and come along and bench 2mw evening, there'll be a few of us there giving you a hand.

So hopefully we will not have to heat the room to much.

See all you volunteers bright and early in the morning.
