Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Possible Enhancement to Show Day.

Upon being an active member of Bradford and District Aquarist Society and the Yorkshire and Lancashire show circuits some time ago. Always on our designated show day (and any other affiliated clubs event) we would also have an Auction. This would encompass the sale of all surplus aquatic related items such electrical, tanks, livestock, plants etc. The auction would be an even bigger draw (crowd wise) than the show itself. A 10% commission was also levied against all items sold which brought in extra revenue for the club.
Now I don't know of the legal implications of having such an event in Southern Ireland (health and safety and all the usual political correctness of this crazy modern era) but has the management committee ever considered running an Auction to coincide with the Show itself.
Just a thought

Colin,
We tried having an auction three years back and it was hardly what even the most benevolent observer would have called anything more than a failure.
I believe this was considered again in advance of this year's Show and it was decided against.
Perhaps someone from the Show Committee could explain better?

Not a problem John,
Maybe things are a little different over here.
The Auction on the mainland was always very well supported. A money earner for the club as it were.
At least you have tried such a venture and I guess if it failed then so be it.
I'm just trying to get a feel for the way things are run over here lol

Sorry mate a touch of political in-correctness there on my behalf, I didn't mean to offend anyone.
Probably the UK would have been a better choice of word.
I am from Northern Ireland originally but left to live in England for around 17 years and due to the untimely death of my mother I returned home to care for my sick father (me being the only child). Again please excuse if I've offended anyone as I hold no political afflictions nor want to.

No offense taken Colin! I understand that the UK "mainland" is technically the mainland of Northern Ireland but pretty much all of the users (bar a few) of this forum are in the Republic.
Now that's enough politics for today!!!

By the way... I have thoroughly enjoyed your contributions to the forum so far, especially since there has been a huge increase in non-fish related posts in the "social and rubbish" forum in the last couple of months! Thanks!

Thanks for that...I'm an aquarist and have no interest in politics whatsoever.
I hope to contribute some more in the coming weeks with a few more articles which should keep things moving along.

Personally I would love to see an auction, however I don't think there are (yet) enough breeders and buyers to support a successful auction. It greatly adds to the organisational requirements, space etc. and it should be something we re-consider in the future, but certainly for this year it was decided against.

I have only attended one auction in the UK, probably just as well as I came home with a few boxes of fish after that. The attendance was great, it was very well organised and 99% of the fish presented were in great shape. Also very importantly at least half the fish were rare or unusual and there was a marker there for them.

In fairness to the auction 3 years ago, it was kind of tagged on at the end and there was not enough publicity about what would be for sale or how the auction would work. A bag of labidochromis caeruleus were bought by someone for the goldfish tank, when they realised that wasn't a perfect match they were passed to someone to keep with their angelfish, they eventually found a home with someone that could properly accommodate, but it was a perfect example of what we didn't want.
