Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Because I don't have the energy for much else today I thought I would sit down and write up some facts and figures about the show. The show was a great success thanks to exhibitors, visitors, volunteers, judges and sponsors. It was the Judges opinion that the quality of fish on display was very high and the highest in recent years. The number of entries was up on previous years, but the number of entrants was down slightly on last year. The usual big classes of African Cichlids and Catfish were well represented and the new novelty class for Inverts was a great success with 17 entries.

The "Pairs of Fish" and "Breeders Team - Egglayers" classes saw a huge increase in the number of entries this year with 36 entries between them, a very positive sign for fish keeping and breeding in the hobby.

It was unfortunate that we had to close four major classes due to lack of entries, J -Rasboras, L-Loaches, X o-t - Breeders Team - Livebearers & U Single tailed Goldfish. Please don't tell me there is no one out there breeding guppies or owns a goldfish!

All of the Livebearer classes. O - Guppies, P - Cultivated Livebearers, Q - Swordtails, R - Platies and S Mollies had to be combined to make a single class T - Any Other Species Livebearers and even then there were only 4 entries. Surely there are more livebearers in our tanks than that. Maybe, incorrectly, some people think that these are "common" fish and don't deserve to be shown, but a good specimen of any fish is worth showing, regardless of class.

It would be great to see many more people bringing along a few fish, rather than relying on the same few people every year to bring half the exhibits.

Attendance at the show was considerably down on last year, I think we have to blame the weather for that, hopefully next year it will be fine, but cold.

Special thanks to Ian(igmillichip) and Justine of The Herpetological Society of Ireland for an excellent display and to our special guest Anton Lamboj who gave excellent presentations on "Western African Cichlids" and "The Victorian Cichlids Breeding program". (separate post to follow).

Personally, on behalf of everyone that attended the show and as Show Secretary I would like to thank all of the volunteers that helped throughout the weekend, some of whom are not even directly involved in the club. In advance if I forget someone no offence intended, it's an exhaustion thing, in no particular order: Paul (Goldy's other half), Peter (Zig), John, Andrew, Dave (Acara), Paddy (Paddytuite), Adrian (Arabu1973), John, (Johnh), Bernard, Ioan (Xeon) and his Dad, Ken (KenS), Daniel (Anotheridiot), Tom and Jo, Andrius, Derek (dclifford), Johnny, Astrid (MrsFishpatrick), Mags, Platty252's Mam and Sister, and of course Darren (Platty252) and Nessa (Goldy) without whom the show would never happen.

Finally thank you to those that travelled long distances, great to see Valerie and Declan from Galway, Mickey, Catherine and David from Drogheda, Donald (Killikid), Chris (Puddlefish), Martin (Duzzy1) from Limerick, Shea (Sheag35) from Galway and I believe we also had visitors from Cork too.

Great report,many thanks.
Congrats to all the winners, and anyone who showed their lovely fish, but didnt place.Don't think they're 'no good',there were some cracking fish there that didnt 'place',especially some of mine:laugh:
I thought the standard was pretty dammed good, and was delighted to see more of a variety of species, particularly favourites of mine eg betta, corys and L-nos.
I picked what was probably my 'favourite in show',and he got 2nd in his class,Class Db.

Dargh,
That was a great write up, great to see all the different varietys of fish and inverts folk keep.
Also amazed at the amount of work and time it must of taken to pull the show off. It was nice to put some faces to the name on here.
It was my first show and enjoyed it immensely.
I will get more involved next year and i will enter several categories and help out where possible.
Well done to one and all involved with the show
Regards to one and all,
Denis

Daragh

It doesn't really matter, does it? - we can understand it, after all.

Thanks for the report Daragh and thanks too for all the 'Show-Secretary-ing' you did in the lead up.

It was fantastic to see the L-046 among the entries in the 'G' section, possibly one of the highlights of the whole Show entries for many people. Some other highlights for me were getting to meet (and re-meet) lots of people whom I only know by their Forum identities but feel I actually know very well all the same. Now I know what many of you look like - but, even worse, is now you all know what I look like and can hide away if you happen to see me on one of my occasional 'Fishy' trips across to the Capital.
We really did almost have Country-wide attendance as you say.

I finally got to meet Mickey, Catherine and David which - when you consider how long we have corresponded both by email and phone - was a meeting destined to happen, here's hoping it won't be another four years until our next get-together!

It was also a great thrill for me to meet again with Valerie and Declan, two very special friends from Galway and Seamus and Martin from a bit further South of there. Colin and Donald from 'up North' were both very nice chaps too, not forgetting Cardinal from the other side of the Slieve Blooms. Ian M's HSI presentation was brilliant, I feel the need to diversify. He and Justine were such enthusiastic and compelling people, answering every question I could think of with ease and were most authoritative experts in their field (and seemed to know a lot about Fish too) thank you both of you.

I did see a Convertible Mini with Cork number plates arrive just as I walked around to the shops and afterwards it was in the Hall car park so as Daragh says, we had visitors from all the Provinces.

I was very impressed with the intense dedication shown by Darragh S in taking photographs of (it would seem) just about every fish on display, fair play to you Darragh - like Daragh O my camera didn't leave its bag all day, well the little one got a very quick airing for my entry into the Show Photo Competition - but more of that later...and I really must shortly take the time to look at the photos people have posted for us all to see

All in all it was a brilliant 'Fishy' day for me - the only regret I have about it is the year-long wait we all have for it to happen again.

But - even though it is that long to think ahead, please do start planning it for next year - we don't want Acara to win all the classes next year as his post suggests he is intending to.
What we all want to see is a share of the awards going to a much wider group of people - it isn't hard to do - all you need is some nice examples of any fish species...they really do not have to be rarities. Points are awarded by the Judges based upon a fishes condition, deportment, size when compared to the guide laid down by the ruling body of Fish Shows (the FBAS) - no extra points are awarded for the entries being rare species, honestly!
So, like Acara, start making tentative plans now. You might also consider joining your local Fish Club as some are now holding occasional evening club shows, where you will be able to bring fish and exhibit them in a 'competitive' environment. By the time next year's Show comes around you could be up there with Daragh Owens, Goldy, Darren Platty, Acara, KenS, Xeon and - wait for it - JohnH. But, like the Lotto, you have to be in it to win it.
You must remember, the Judges can only award points to Fish in front of them and of the fish which were exhibited this year there wasn't very much of a gap in points awarded between the first and last placed in every section - give it some thought, a well-proportioned common-or-garden Guppy (for example) will always score more points than a poorer quality fish which might have cost hundreds. So, give it some thought - you will be made very welcome.

Now,
That's far better and absolutely the correct thing to say (but I do happen to be among the "more mature" group of Forum members - purely by coincidence, you understand).

great report daragh and very well put john. It is a good run down of proceedings for everyone. I know I was there and even presented the awards but it was a bit of a blur at that stage so to see it in plain english is good. Well done again to Kens for best fish in show. Its a beaut.

One or 2 things to add: Thanks to the judges who worked really hard to get the judging finished in time to open the doors. We had 2 Senior 2 newly qualified and 2 trainee judges this year which was fantastic. Well done to you Derek, Phil, Daragh, Darren, Dave and Adrian. Hopefully we will be able to have more people interested in training and taking the Judges exam for future shows.

And lastly just to say that we have kept our record of not 1 fish lost at a show and this was the 4th in recent times (and I dont mean misplaced.) This is really important to all of us as they are our pets at the end of the day and we all sepnd a lot of time and effort looking after them. I know mine are part of the family and the kids insist on funerals so it would be very distressing if bubbles had to come home with a plaque for 1st place and then go to the big fish tank in the sky. (yes I know I am mad)

I should be ok by next years show I think...
