Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Just a heads up.

Without naming or shaming anyone or place, there are a few folks here who will remember a thread posted a while back about a particular petshop in Santry that simply wasnt "up to scratch". Over the past couple of months I have wandered into this place, usually once a fornight or so to have a look about the place as it is now under new managment and is equipped with a "fish guy" that apparently has been told to look after their tanks and nothing else. Well I have to admit, there has been a drastic improvement in the fish section. The tanks were clean, very few dead fish and I only noticed one or two tanks that were a bit overstocked (Tetras). That said, their prices are a little high for certain species, particularly Dwarf Cichlids and their marine section was pretty much empty but I figured I would let folks interested in freshies know that it may be worth taking a chance here again. Im yet to purchase anything from them since they cleaned up their act but the boot has clearly gone in at the fish section and mabey, just mabey, things will not go south again. I am in no way affilliated to this place, I just thought anyone who, like myself, boycotted the place, might be interested in having a look for themselves.

Well said Jay i 2nd that, i go there once or twice a week for a browse and like yourself haven't bought any fish there in months i do buy some dry goods tho as there fairly reasonable. But i hav noticed on more than one visit a guy in his 30's given direction to the staff about the tanks so i reckon this must be the guy given the place a turnaround. Gerry

It's always good news when a 'shunned' shop gets the message and makes drastic improvements.
Really the only way is forward (unless you count the 'shutting down' option, in which case there are two ways to go).
Let's hope the improvement doesn't turn out to only be temporary as so often happens when the person making the improvements becomes disillusioned and moves on.

Jay, why don't you make yourself known to the 'new man' in charge and tactfully make a few suggestions which might give him 'food for thought'?

Might not be a bad idea, I asked for a few fish bags the last time I was there and walked out with a roll of them so my first impressions of him are good. Couldnt hurt...

The place is certainly much cleaner and fish healthier.

Totally geared towards basic, bread and butter fish though which is a pity as though the old style was bad they used to have some really unusual stock from time to time.

O had me a Bala Shark from there and he's a fine fish, here months now no probs.

As for noise, I made terrible noise in there at the racks pointing out dead and dying fish. Talked to the new chap, pretty much told him the place was shunned by many because of the state the fish and tanks ware in and that it was looking a lot better. Pricey still, but I will say that there is another lfs that does take great care of marines, massively good care of marines but does not have that same set up for freshies yet charge a very high price on those freshies, it aint justified. In a lot of species they are dearer than Santry. I am not into marines so this has turned me off going in there however amazing te setup may be.

I'm glad to hear that they've cleaned up their act. When I was there a few months back and complained about the dead fish in the tanks (one tank was carpeted with dead fish) I was basically told to eff-off if I wasn't going to buy anything. I haven't stepped inside the shop since, but if things are different I'm more than willing to give them another shot.

Will probably take a trip down there tomorrow and have a look, hopefully I'll be pleasantly suprised.

i'd still complain and stress how far you had to go out of your way to another store because of this chaps ignorance and state the dollar you spent in other shops, wen management hear this from a returning customer they might keep staff on their toes

Check out the angling section, it is fantastic

I dont think he'd get fired, the manager of my store gets people contacting him all the time, "I'd like to make a complaint about...",the manager cuts in at this stage and says "what did Dave say to you?"B)

I hung around and looked for a manager but couldn't find one and the guy who was rude to me was the only one on the floor (it was almost closing time). I did go home and write them a strongly worded email but I never got a reply.

The funny thing was that I made a new email account specifically to send the email and a few weeks later someone had used it to sign up to a bunch of unusual dating sites... I had never used that email address for anything other than sending them that email.
So, yeah, make of that what you will.

I'm looking forward to trecking out there tomorrow anyway and seeing how much things have changed.
