Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I've looked at these before - ideal for emptying a pond, or similar but would be a bit 'over the top' for constant use, the power consumption would have the meter whizzing around very sharply.

We used to hire better quality ones of these out for draining flooded basements, wells, septic tanks etc in the family business. Would be very good for emptying a pond... although surely one could just attach a hose onto the out-flow of the filter box and drain the pond down to pump level that way?

...suppose it's still a handy thing to have for €30.

could you use this pump to do water changes, as in refilling your tanks with treated water from a large drum or container? for big tanks. to do away with the carrying buckets.

Yes but at nearly 120l per min I'd imagine the flow would cause a splash or two... A smaller powerhead from your LFS for the same money or cheaper would probably be more suitable!

It may be abit too powerful to use for aquariums as it pumps 7000 ltrs per hour. It is very heavy on the electricity bill being at 400w but id only be using it for 2-3 minutes every week or 2. And @ wolfsberg thats wat iv been doing but its a small filter and takes ages to empty the pond fully, where as this pump will empty the water down to the 1mm mark.

Go for it Gerry! Even if its only because you want a shiny new toy! ... That's usually my justification for buying pretty much everything! Would defo be handy for a pond.

Just wondering why do you need to empty the pond so much? Does it get murky? you could use the pump to fashion a crude, cheap DIY pond vac maybe?...

The water turns green very quick so i usually change the water once every 2 weeks. The pond is in direct sunlight but unfortunately it couldn't go anywhere else in my garden, and who doesn't like a shiny new toy

UV units aren't mad expensive... IIRC your pond is quite small so you might get a UV for €60ish quid more than this pump.
I think I read before that the fish don't mind green water themselves at all, it's really just a cosmetic thing. Any thoughts on this?

I use this exact pump for my water changes and it one of the best things I have ever bought. I have a 6x2x2 with a 4 foot sump, so somewhere in the region of 800l. I do a weekly 200l water change.I have a 200l container out in a shed were my RO water sits. The pump sits in this container and it it pumps the 200ish liters in about 15 min. There is an adjuster on the pump connector which would allow you to slow it down.
