Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Water where I am in D6 is AHB, technical expression for extremely brown :-)

Strangely TDS has not changed, still 60pppm, how's that.

pH is up from usual 7.6 to 7.9.

There is probably work going on somewhere along the line.
All it takes is a knock on the pipes to dislodge some of the gunk that lines the walls of the pipes.

Just dont use it for a day or two.

No change in the water Dublin 12.

A guy testing the water out in my estate in d11 said that they were aiming for a chlorine content of 2 points, not sure how much that is, but he said it was because they wanted to make sure they killed everything, which kinda makes me glad we switched to bottled some time ago.
He was testing it with some electronic jobby and said those close to the source are getting lashed out of it with Chlorine as they are, obviously near the source where a lot is gettin pumped in to get the distribution

Found this on page www.h2ou.com/h2wtrqual.htm

Did the guy mean 2.0 as in almost 6 times what fish can tollerate?

Table 3. Effects of chlorine on fish and aquatic organisms

0.006 Kills trout fry in two days.
0.01 Recommended maximum for all fish and aquatic life.
0.01 Kills Chinook Salmon and Coho Salmon.
0.01-0.05 Oysters have difficulty pumping water through their bodies.
0.02 Maximum Brook and Brown Trout can withstand.
0.05 Maximum amount that can be tolerated by young Pacific Salmon in the ocean.
0.1 Kills most marine plankton.
0.25 Only the hardiest fish can survive.
0.37 Maximum fish can tolerate.

@ Mark. Our water here in D11 comes mainly from the reservoir in Ballycoolin. Thats just up the road near Blanchardstown so its not suprising the water here is stinking with chlorine. Mines had a hum of the stuff for weeks now.

That tower is part of the upgrade to the supply, built to help with the increased water needs here on the good side of the city as the pressure was never great here. Ballycoolin is further up the road next to Blanch but Im sure a lot of the water from there does go to the tower before it fed to the mains pipes in the houses.
