Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Above is the general poster.

For person on this forum, many people keep frogs or axolotls....these animals are part of the theme.

As a note, when we talk about 'Inverts' we mean Spiders, Scorpions and insects. The H.S.I. doesn't wish to encroach upon the 'inverts' kept by aquarists within their marine set-ups.

This is not a judged show as such, it is a forum for keepers to show and discuss their animals.

So far I understand that we have some nice animals already pre-booked.

Unfortunately not shrimps. :)

When we incorporated the coverage of 'Inverts' in our constitution, it could have opened the doors to nearly every speceis of animal on earth.
So we have taken the context of certain species of 'Inverts' being covered within the general terms of the Herpetological Society (eg spiders, scorpions, stick insects) but that Bees and Butterflies are not part fo that (they probably have their own societies), and that the marine inverts such as corals belong to the aquatic societies.

I don't know if I'd be looked upon too kindly if I plonked a big Tarantula on the Invert Section of a Fish Show. :)

However, in a global world of joint ventures there is opportunity to fuse these contextual differences.

Hope to see you there John.

As John says the ITFS will be there, the HSI is very happy to have the ITFS there. :)

I am awaiting some poster designs to be complete; once they are done then I'll load up a file for sponsors to display of they wish. For some, someone may be delivering a few posters if any of our committee happen to live close enough.

I've had a quick checlist given on what animals are being on display.
And there is still 3 weeks to go on this.

So far, we have 50 animals pre-booked including various snakes from small snakes to large constrictors; Praying Mantis' and other inverts; from leopard geckos to tegus; and a Caiman (correctly handled and accompanied by a very experienced keeper).

just as a note, we have a vigorous but reasonably practicable health and safety policy.....and all animals, their enclosures, and keeper responsibility is checked before and monitored during the event. So these are not free-for-all bringalongs; all risks are assessed and controlled to keep the risks to a minimum.

The ITFS will be there with a stand. So there is opportunity to cross-talk between the 2 communities of keepers.

Remember this is Saturday 5th March.

The ITFS will also be there.

(ps. I could have attached the poster, but it is quite big, and In didn't want to overload the site here.)

Hoping to see some familiar and some new faces.

Ian,
Have managed to (belatedly) add this to the Home Page - hope it garners some more interest (not that that should be necessary - seems like it will be a most interesting Show)...see you there.

Cheers Ken - see you there - if my ancient satnav can find the way...the maps on it are rather outdated, a bit like its owner, really!

Just got back, great afternoon - met some really interesting people (and Ian...only joking).
I'm not really into Reptiles and the like but there were some stunning exhibits there.

To anyone who didn't attend - you missed a really good and excellently-run Show.
Thanks everyone involved.

This was the first of its kind we'd organised, and didn't know how it would turn out.

I think it was an excellent day.
We got really good support, and this sets the scene for a future similar event....and maybe even bigger.

We had a nice relaxed social atmosphere, and when one considers the type of animals on display then that will tell you the background work that had to go into making sure everything was safe but that people could wonder around freely.

I will thank the guys form the ITFS for setting up a stand and supporting this. I hope they had a good day.

Some of our reptile community were quite amazed by the size and quality of the aquatic frogs on the ITFS stand. :)

Good to see the guys and ladies from the ITFS.

Great show / event organised by The Herpetological Society of Ireland yesterday. Very interesting specimens, that all looked well cared for and healthy.

John Gannon, Goldy (Nessa) and Johnny (Leva Star) set up the ITFS stand and manned it through-out the day.

For the display we had a Puffer Tank, African Cichlids (supplied by Derek Doyle) a planted tank specially created for the day by Darren (Platty252) a shrimp tank (moi) and stars of the day African Clawed Frogs from Nessa.

JohnH, Derek and KenS visited.

A couple of snaps:

Nice pictures Darragh (not too sure about the chap with the platinum silvery hair and a can of Vimto), and very kind words. I'll pass the words onto the others.

I saw some very nice words on reptile forums about the puffer display, by the way. :)

The ITFS stand was right next to the caiman display.
JP (owner of the caiman) has promised to bring his very (and I mean very) large snake to the next event.

OK, a few quick snaps from the Show and Tell.

The Crowd just at opening time…and it did not get empty until closing.
Who’s there (and I’ve been careful not to show faces of young people)

Justine munching food in our eating area….but she did seem to spend a lot of time in the eating area.

People looking at a dissected Cobra at the food kiosks…..well, a book with a dissected model anyway.

FAT FROG. Looks like a rubber glove filled with water. The ITFS stand.

More of the Crowd.
How’s there?

Mark’s Black Heads (like a Woma with some boot polish if you ask me)….one of three of them at the Show.

A gecko….a leo gecko….one of Lora’s.

Another gecko….a leo gecko….one of Lora’s.

And this type is my favourite leo. One of Lora’s.

Collies invert thing….big millipede.

Another of Collie’s invert things….a big snail. Great creature. And for the record….I don’t eat French Food, so it would very safe in my house.

Wes and ‘Rob’ Rob….with Rob being inspired by proper animals such as mantids.

Wes and his Mantid.

Mantid.
I didn’t want to spend too much time of taking photos….so I didn’t get any pics of the miniature hatchlings at the show.

Elaine with her Uro.

More of the crowd at opening time.

Not a bad little snake this one….as an understatement. I have other pics and some video….but one pic will do. This was Chris’s superb little animal….and I am gathering that a few others took to this snake.

JP and Tia.
