Using a sump for the first time......
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi Alan,
you wont beat this one (english.royal-exclusiv.de/installation-instruction-red-dragon-pump.htm) in power consumtion and running noise or better no noise. The minor problem for you is the price:lol: .Regards,Tim

So you may create more noise in your bedroom yourself to overcome the noise of the pump

First thing you should do is measure how much water the sump can hold without overflowing if the power goes off.... Fill up the tank till the overflow Then keep an eye on the sump while it fills up (Dont fill it up full.. leave a few inches), turn the pump on and mark the level of the water in the sump......
to do water changes just turn off the pump, let the water run into the sump (It wont overflow if you keep the water level below the line). Then empty x amount and fill up the tank.when it hits the overflow watch the sump so it doesn't overflow.
Iv overflowed my sump a few times

as above for water changes, and to fill again i mix my water in buckets, switch on pump and put new water into sump. let the pump do all the work.
i'd advise a sump sock, to put over the overflow pipes it'll save you ever having to clean out the media in the sump (a royal pain in the hole)
plenty ceramic and bioballs and you can cram the fish in (sponges can slow things down alot)
i have exactly the same tank but rebuilt the stand so before you fill it you should re-enforce the stand with wooden battens especially the corners. also insulate the back, sides and bottom of the sump (for heat and noise)
i have a fairly quiet haiyang 4000l/h pump for it, just sit it on sponges to stop vibrations and now i only hear the trickling of water down the weir. very soothing but no good after too many cups o' tea! you can always put aeroboard inside the whole stand it helps againts heat loss and also sound getting out
