Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Not sure if this has been done but this is just cruel!

Live fish and turtle key rings are all the rage in China

The latest fashion accessories in China are live fish and turtle key rings – and in China they are totally legal!

These trinkets seal the unfortunate fish or turtle inside a 7cm plastic bag, where no doubt the oxygen will become quickly depeleted and there's no way of feeding them.

The key rings are often sold outside subway entrances and train stations.

But, as the Global Times points out, there is no existing animal protection law that would prevent their sale, despite an outcry from animal protection groups who want an immediate ban.

Vendors claim that the coloured water in the key ring contains 'nutrients' which will keep the animal alive for months.

"To put a living thing inside a sealed and confined space for profit is immoral and pure animal abuse," Qin Xiaona, director of the NGO Capital Animal Welfare Association, told the Global Times.

"China only has a Wild Animal Protection Law. If the animals are not wild animals they fall outside the law's scope."

Qin appealed to citizens not to buy the key rings, saying: "If nobody buys it, the market will die."

Unfortunately, business was looking pretty good outside one subway station, with ten keyrings being sold in five minutes – although one of the purchasers had apparently bought hers to free the turtle inside it.

Fortunately here in the 'Civilised' World there is protection against these sorts of abuses, but China - not a good country to make any sort of protest from within!
Thanks for bringing this up Bill, do you have a link to the actual article?

Too much free time, too little sense. Nothing surprises me any more where Humans are concerned, I wonder who conceived the word/words Human Kind, where does the kind part fit in?

I think anybody that wants to put anything in a bag and close it up should be made try it themselves first for a week or so. Its the clowns that buy them are more to blame, no demand no sale no bag....

A person who surrenders when he is WRONG, is HONEST. A person who SURRENDERS when not SURE, is WISE. A person who surrenders even if he is RIGHT, is a HUSBAND.

Just go back a hundred years and you'll see who would do this, they had Circus which advertised freaks to bring in the Punters which came in in droves guided by misplaced curiosity and blatent ghoulishness, I have no doubt there are "People" more than willing to partake in the practise, remember Fur lovers?

Just thinking, they would have to make them the same day they sell them because of the little space for air the little turtle has.
What makes it worse for me is I'm pretty sure thats the same type of turtle i have, mississippi map?

I cant beleave they are still selling these things.
I first read about these a year or two ago. But figured it would be a short lived fad.

It's a bit like disco stu (simpsons) going around with the dead goldfish in his platforms.
Except this is no animation.
