Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi,

I just got myself a 7ft tank, I am working on plans at the min for the stand and surrounding cabinet.

I want to do the whole build and set up for small money but with an good quality finish, so I am looking for any ideas people can fire at me. What im looking for the most info in is the rocks i can use and that wont effect the water condition i want to use a lot of rocks in the display but i don't want to spend mad money im using ocean rock in my rio300 which i keep my Malawi's in but it is very expensive and couldn't afford to fill a 7ft tank with it. Gedas gave me a good idea to use crazy paving which comes in all different shapes and sizes, inexpensive and most important won't effect my water what so ever.

So if anyone has anymore ideas on what i can use fill me in, i want to see how many options i have
and if yous have any tips tricks or ideas on setting up a big tank I would very much appreciate them.

Cheers,
Stephen

Hi stephen,

If there is anyone company in your area that engrave head stones, they will have lots of off cuts of marble and granite which as far as i know would be safe for water, also try kitchen fitters that may have off cuts of same left over from counter tops. Not too sure what way it will look in tank , maybe rough it up a bit with a hammer fist to make it look a bit more natural.Or if there is a quarry in your area go and see if they have slate rock, it shouldnt be to expensive to get a wheel barrow full.
