Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I'm looking at upgrading my tank and was wondering what would be the minimum tank size that could house an adult arowana comfortably for life?
I was looking at maybe a 8' * 2.5' * 2.5' but is 2.5' too narrow considering they can get to 3'? Also priced a 3' wide tank but it was a bit crazy!
Will have to get a stand as well to keep the wife happy so money is a factor.
Thanks for the help,
Alan.

I think a plywood or concrete tank with a glass front would be the only way to go.

think theres a thread somewhere on the forum here
have to build another 1 in dublin next week as a display tank in a shop
the only way to go as you would need 25mm glass for a tank that size

Wanted this tank in the sitting room but might be too big for it now.
Does a plywood tank have wood on the 3 sides and then glass on the front?
Is it built on a stand or a concrete foundation?
Not sure how i'm gonna convince the wife into this!! Just got her sold on the 8' * 2.5'!!

ski, mossy can be a wealth of info on the subgect but also there is alot of info over the net on the building pro's and con's along with loads of build threads that can give you a great pictorial guide and insight before you make your mind up on the project

Right so this is going to be a huge job.

you will need a sump system for a tank that size so you will need a stand and put your filter inside
if you want a room divider so you can see through the tank from say sitting room and dining room you could do the bottom and both ends in ply and the frame the 2 sides in glass.if your putting it along a wall the bottom, back and 2 ends will be ply and the front viewing will be glass

Thanks for the info though and good suggestions with the plywood and concrete. Looking at it now on the web and there seems to be a good bit out there alright on building them.
Priced an 8' * 3' tank and it was a crazy price so this might offer a better solution.
Thanks again,
Alan.
