Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hey all, i would just like to share a little warning with everyone.
so i was cleaning out a small quarentine tank i purchased on friday, after scrubbing it clean inside and out i dried it off. so i picked it up on my way back into the house and bang! let it slip out of my hands, the tank snapped in 2 but to my shock it bounced back up and slashed my wrist missing the artery by quarter of an inch. so after a crazy rush to the hospital, loads of stitches and a few painful days i would just like to remind everyone to please be careful when handling their tanks and don't make the same mistake as me :(
thanks for reading

wayne

jesus, sorry to hear that wayne, atleast your ok yourself mate fair play though for the warning because its too easy for things like this to happen and just shows how dangerous the hobby can be.

if its any help i have a couple of cracked tanks (ends cracked) left over that may be easily repaired with some of whats left of your tank, just when you say its for quarantine and these are free of course pal

hope ye recover soon
dave

Holy Cow Wayne, sorry to hear that news, must have scared the heck out of you. These things can and do happen, I was offered a large Acrylic Tank recently, I wonder are there any safety issues that accompany this type of Tank?

Kev.

ye it was as simple as a little wet patch that made my hand slip, scary!!

eh as for the acrylic i really dont know kev, i would imagine if it broke it would shatter into tiny pieces rather than big shards, but i dont plan on finding out any time soon

cheers, wayne

An acrylic tank probably wouldnt be as sharp, unless you fell on it.
But could possibly jump higher and go for the jugular.

sorry to here the cut dude very nasty I've cut myself so many times when cleaning or moving tanks
Keep the cut covered when doing your tank as it very open to infection try get some rubber gloves
like exam gloves used in hospitals use them every time I'm doing anything with the tanks.

What you need is an assistant especially when moving a glass tank of certain awkward sizes.

Been lucky so far never been cut by my tank, maybe a health and safety course or manual handling for moving potentially dangerous items.
