Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Nice tanks, but that Back to the Nature gear is overpriced and only last a couple of years. Friend of mine bought that root background you can see in some of the discus tanks. Fell apart after 4 years. And it you get balck hair algae on in you are up sh*t creek without a paddle

I agree, they are too expensive, but have them in my two large tanks (one - 3 years, another 4) and no sign of falling apart at all. Regarding algae - I brush them with a very hard plastic brush if algae problem appears. The only problem I see - that these backgrounds take a lot of space in the tank and you have to install them proper so small fish can't get behind.

IMO they couldnt fall apart suddenly, they are a sturdy structure and hair algae is a problem with everything not particularily BTN backgrounds! They are hugely expensive but then again so is fishkeeping at a level where you try to recreate a natural biotope.

Nothing does this better than one of these.Did you look at the pictures Holger, you would have to be mad not to fall in love with them. You would also have to be mad to pay those prices:woohoo: :woohoo:

If I had the money Id have the stuff as wallpaper in my fishroom/bedroom,I love it.
As Chris says it is mad expensive and I only have a BTN background because I got one virtually for free!!;)

As far as I know the Frontosa tank belongs to Chris so she can speak from experience, well done by the way,we have some talented fishkeepers on this forum!!:)

@ChrisM
no doubt they are nice tanks. You can make a biological filter out of these backgrounds. I'd rather drill my tanks for a sump and make the background myself. With a bit of effort you can get very similar results at a fraction of the price and they are really once offs. You will be able to rub off any black hair algae without ruining the BTN backgrounds.
I guess, it's rather how much you want to spend on fish and how much on a background.

In my personal opinion the rock scape Back to Nature displays are cool but I think the tree root is awful looking and very far away from being back to nature! It looks like a big elephants leg in the tank. My apologies in advance to anyone who has one but its just not for me! You could do a lot better with some nice pieces of Mopani wood!cheaper too!

Lead me not into temptation, For I can find it myself!
