Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I have just bought my first tank, its a Jinlong 350 liter RHB1500. I bought it because it was cheap. I looked around and in the end I was between a juwel rio 400 and this jinlong. I went for the jinlong as it was 150 cheaper and I have read on the forums that alot of you guys take the filters out of the juwels anyway. (the jinlong tanks are on pet-bliss website if you want to have a look at them, thats not where i got mine though).

My question is this. Do I need a better/external filter for my Jinlong and do I need a better heater for my tank?

Brand names and place to buy would help alot. Thanks guys.

Anyone who has a Jinlong and wants to tell me its great, i'd appreciate. If you think they are rubbish, please don't tell me as I've bought it now :S

Hey Paul,

First of all you need to tell us the exact specs

Filter: How many litres per hour
Heater: Wattage
Fish:What fish do you intend on keeping and how many
Lighting Unit: What lights came with it,do you want to have a planted tank

Thanks Chris.

Filter is an internal filte 2300 liters per hour max flow
Lights that came with it are 2x 40watt tubes (sounds very low)
I am hoping to have a planted tank but haven't got my head around this yet.
The heater is 300watts (should be plenty but I think i need a spare for peace of mind) what would you recommend as i don't trust the brand.
I am hoping to have a ciclid tank. Havent decided between african or south american. (i need to buy another book).

Hi Paul

I would be inclined to get a good external filter for that size of tank. An internal will do, but external is by far the best if you can afford it.

The 2 x 40w tubes are pretty started for that size of tank. You will need to concentrate on plants with low light requirements or upgrade the lights which isn't that easy or cheap to do.

The heater should be fine. You could get two 150w or two 200w which would be better. Problem with one big heater is that if it gets stuck in the on position, you end up with fish soup. Any of the main brands such as Fluval or Jager are good quality and reliable.

You should seriously look at Africans. They are colourful and reasonably easy to keep (once you choose good starter fish). Of course, I am biased when it comes to Africans.

Regards,

Ken.

Hi Paul.
I agree with what the lads are saying here.I don't keep Africans, apart from a small shell-dweller tank, but keep Sth Americans, mainly acaras. You can get a lot more Africans into a tank than you would with the Americans, only thing is,you wouldn't have plants in an African tank normally.
As for equipment,Tetratec(Tetra)is great kit,I use thier internals, externals and heaters.I would highly reccommend the external range,do a great job and are silent.Check out our sponsors, and also www.aquatic-village.com/htmlsite/home.asp

Hi. Could you tell me where you got it from? I was also thinking about a Juwel but they are pricey and I already have a good filter, so dont really want the one that comes with it. Cheers
