Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Just wondering if anyone had any experience with these? Although the aquarium itself is relatively small and there would be a limitation on the types of fish that could be used i think they are really nice.
Anyone have one and how are they?

Hi tazdogue,

I have looked at these in the past and have contemplated getting one as they look great but my main concern was the depth of them. They are extremely narrow which IMO is unfair on the fish. They are great ideas for people who have limited space in an apartment (like me) but I do not think even the smallest of fish would have the space they need to swim around.

Then there is the issue of the wall actuallly supporting them and I know some of the newer houses only have plasterboard for walls and personally I could not see my walls holding a tanks of that size and weight. Then there is the question of wires running through walls as there needs to be alot of support for the weight of the tank - alot of drilling required - ya can see where I'm going with this!!!

I do think at the end of the day it is a matter of personal taste and preferance and its up to you but that was just my pennies worth!!

The solution to my problem was to move some furniture around, get rid of a few tables to make room for my 90l tank and stand!!!!

Hi tazdogue,
i would have many of the same concerns as Leonie but there are fish. that are small enough to use. but with modern houses fixing them to the wall is problem i would be most concerned about.plus there is the maintenance side they still need to be regularly cleaned, they do need to cycled,
In fact as much as, if not more maintenance than a normal tank

My suggestion would be to contact Gerard Evans.
check out the sponsors and go to Water World.

I know he has plenty of experience fitting all types of tanks!
and would be more than willing to help you out! With advice and purchasing the ideal tank for you.

of course this goes for all sponsors, just Gerry would have more practical experience with installation.

hi we have one of these tanks and so far so good yes they do require somewhat more maintenance but they are a stunning looking tank when up and running, and the little bit of extra maintenance is well worth it from a visual viewpoint. In regards to stocking it yes it is quite small so you should really use your common sense as to what you stock it with. No problem with wires as they all neatly come out from the side of the tank. A solid concrete wall in my opinion for the fixing of this tank is essential as even with modern day plasterboard fixings i would not be relying on them.
