Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi...is it safe to put acrylic sheeting inside your tank???

the past 2-3 days i've been aqua'scaping and the plan was to create a 2/3 level stone effect inside my tank. by creating a cave with stone, covering the cave with a sheet of acrylic(with holes drilled through it),then i was goin to stack lots of nice beach stones on top of the sheet..its unescessarily complicated i know but i think it'll be something special when its done.

i just have a few concerns!!!

after i drilled the acrylic sheeting it kind of has a dust (which i will remove, before putting it in the tank) but im worried the exposed part(drilled parts) of the acryic will be toxic to fish!?

anyone got any idea? also should i treat the acrylic before placing in the tank??

also i plan on coating the acrylic sheet with coral sand by coating the acrylic with a really thin layer aquarium glue and then sprinkling on the sand..is this a good idea? is aquarium glue safe in large qauntities?

thanks

Andy

Replied by Zoom (Zoom) on topic Re:Acrylic/Perspex!
Good Questions Andy , I've always wanted to know some of those answers myself. For different things I wanted to try. I know there is a special glue for sealing acrylic that must be used opposed to silicon.
Unfortunatly I dont know the answers to be safe to say yes , but my guess would be its ok .(I stress guess.)
Hopefully someone can shed light on this.

Well I maybe a novice on the forum but as for perspex in the tank I dont believe there is a problem

I have never had a problem with it
I used it when I had fry as I only have the one tank and didnt want them to become fish food

Theres an idea for me
buy another tank:cheer:

i have used acrylic many times in my tanks to no negative effects, made my own tank dividers from it and even breeding traps by cutting it and drilling holes similar to what your proposing and not had a problem with it, just be sure to file down drilled and cut areas with a fine file or sandpaper and rinse well and dry it before adding silicon glue, i used coarse sand paper for areas to be glued to allow for better adhesion, as for large quantities of aquarium glue, i previously made caves from food grade plastics and covered them in glue and small pea gravel and again never had a problem with them, just check the manufacturers directions on the glue and follow them re curing times and you should be ok....to be extra safe once cured put them in a bucket of water and change it daily for a week to get rid of any residue.... hope this helps ;)

only problem i can see is if you dont prepare the acrylic properly .ie sanding removing waste bits also on the glue removing any bits not completly covered shouldnt be a problem at all

My dad made a huge tank in work with a few others they used perspex never had any problems with it still think the tank is going and dat was years ago
