Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi folks,
my new tank is getting there, and I just want to double check something. (calling all fluid dynamics experts :) )
does it matter if I put both the spray bar and outlet tube/strainer on the same pane of glass i.e. will the water still circulate enough?? I cant use the long side of the tank as it will have a moulded background on it. I am guessing it will be fine but just want a 2nd opinion.
Thanks for looking
Tom

yes, thats fine, i use it that way

as long as a bit of flow will reach the far pane
you will have a circular motion which is good

what size tank? what size filter? planted tank?

ok great,
tank is 1400mm long, 600mm high and 500mm deep, using a tetratec 1200 filter, not planted as its going to be a malawi setup, will post some pics soon, its been a long awaited upgrade from my juwel 120ltr tank.

hi there

ok, thats a different ball game at that size
Im pretty sure you will need two filters,

Im into planted tanks so better flow is required
so i cant really advise on what you should use
i also know nothing about malawis

so maybe someone else will chime in
but id be pretty sure one ex1200
is nowhere near what you would need

sorry

not planted but plenty of rocks
Yep i though that too regarding the filters, I do know another member here with pretty much the same dims as my tank as he is running it (v successfully) with a tetratec1200, he also uses organic aqua which i will probably use as I cant imagine doing a 20% weekly -

cheers,
T

AS stated above, your proposal is not an option for a tank that size, especially with rocks blocking the water circulation and with the fish you propose.

If you are using organic aqua the media supplied with the tetratec will need to be replaced with just floss or washed out weekly in tap water, which would suggest either getting a second filter or weekly water changes (of preferably both) would be easier.
