Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

That is a snug fit Rory.
I would check there is support under the centre of the unit. Just so there is no unnecessary strain on the unit.
If you need the bits and bobs to get it up and running give me a bell.
I find when tanks are this low down it can be hard to syphon from them. If you use an internal filter you can attach a hose to the outlet to remove water for water changes.

Cheers Darren! It has a couple of mm clearance either side. It does have legs just under where the tank is. I will just do water changes with a jug and refill by siphoning in water from the big tank over it. A mini-power head comes in handy when I get lazy though!
I'm over to Engerland at the end of the month so I'll get all my gear then... apart from the lighting. Thanks for the kind offer!

Nice idea. I presume you don't have any small kids about the house? My 3 year old wouldn't leave a tank at ground level alone for a minute:laugh:

Regards,

Ken.

Perfect Rory, you could always fit some leds , attaching them to the shelf above making removal of the tank that much easier.

Slightly ahead of ya kev!...

www.ikea.com/ie/en/catalog/products/60124286

... Plenty of air circulation and the glass evaporation tray should mean they are safe enough.

The shelf above will be kept clear and I will put hinges on it so it can be flipped up out of the way, leaving about a foot and a half over the tank for maintenance. B)

...thanks padraigr!

Please allow me to butt in here and make a couple of suggestions.
Why don't you make the lid in two glass sections. fitting them into some plastic "E" channel (available from the DIY store)

That way you can slide one piece of glass over and under each other to access each side of the tank as needed.

Suggestion number two involves the lighting as I'm sure your well aware there ar lots of companies manufacturing clip on type units for smaller tanks in a range of wattages. Arcpod springs to mind. Would these be an option.

Or these Link-Lights again from the DIY store

Just a few ideas
Regards
C
