Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

What to do? Dilemma

Hi all.

Trying to sort out a tank dilemma, and I need a second opinion.

I came into possesion of a 3 ft Clearseal tank, with a iron stand. Its not set up at the moment, as I'm in the process of buying a house, and I don't want to set it up and break it down again.

Now it doesn't have any hood or lights.

My dilemma is.

Should I:

  • hold onto it, and put the money into a hood and lights, which is working out more expensive than I first though.]
  • Get the fluval osaka stand with the lights above it, and leave it open topped, so it looks all snazzy, and upgrade to the osaka tank at a later stage.
  • flog it on, and get a better deal on a second hand, that has lighting and hood included
  • option which I can't think of.

  • Stupid thing. Decisions.

    Hi Sofiztikated
i would hold on to it till you have settled in your new home! Building a hood is an option to consider!
some of the new designs are nice but not always as practical as they could be. you could for example use some left over guttering to create a lighting housing which will offer a lot more versatility in which type lighting you can use.

Personally i would flog it on and wait till you are moved in and get the tank right first time in your new house. It,s a pain in the a**e stripping down a tank and upgrading so give yourself the time now to have a look and see if you can get a secondhand tank that you will be happy with long term.
There are always tanks for sale now so abit of patience might turn up a real bargin for you.

    best of luck either way

    Hi,

Flog it and look for something more complete, there are so mmany good deals going on used tanks these days, you can get a complete setup for buttons.

Put it this way, for the cost of the new osaka tank you could get a tank stand filter lights and decor and fish even.

If you have time and cash, you're set.. with a little patience, something we fish keepers lack when we are foaming at the mouth to set up a new tank:)You should use this time to source a great tank with everything you need at the right price.
