How old a tank?
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Just wondering if there is any way of telling how old a tank is there abouts? Silicone consistency or something? I am asking this because of a recent thread about an old tank with a seal giving way and do not want this sceenario in my livingroom.
Cheers

If by any chance it is a Juwel it should have a small sticker on the inside of the trim around the top rim of the tank. This sticker will have a code on it and a date of manufacture.

Mark,
Speaking as someone who has had this happen a couple of times (once a few weeks back) I can tell you that if you closely examine any silicone joint which is 'on its way out' you will see what look like small air bubbles in the seal (it should be uniform with no sign of a bubble (however tiny).
Another tell-tale sign is if algae can be seen gradually working its way under the silicone forming a green (pretty obviously, really) growth between seal and glass.
Today's tanks are generally a lot better built than older ones were but there are two signs I ought to have heeded!

It would indeed, why thank you, will check it. Juwel reseals need to be done how often? this a 450 so I don't want a blowout.
John, cheers, I have other tanks I want to check, invaluable information for viewng tanks I want to possibly buy which is my main concern, cheers.
Ta gentlemen.

You're welcome. If you drop the water level, say during water change and look up at the back corner near the top of the rim it should be there. I don't know how often a Juwel tank should be resealed, depends on a lot of things so I suppose you would have to judge each tank on an individual basis!

Just looking at my Rio there. The sticker is placed just above the internal filter box above the recommended water level marker. IE the back right hand top corner.

That's right dave. It should be there on all of the bigger Juwels with the top trims. On Korals and Rekords I think it is down on the bottom trim somewhere.

Cheers matey, mine is 4 years old. Read that if it is done properly it can last 20 30 years, read too as said, bubbles aand opaque to white colour may indicate an age related failure is imminent, but that it takes many many years for that to happen.
I will be a seal checkin to bits when I look at a tank.
Thanks, a load off. Top notch
