Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hey what do you guys think about a tank that is 3 foot deep or maybe 2 1/2 foot. I'm thinking about getting one made-up
Id say it would be a nightmare to keep clean but look great!

Anyone out there got one like this?

I have a tank out the back that is a meter deep and yes it is hard to clean or get near the bottom.
2ft would be easier to work with and need thinner glass (cheaper).

What are the other dimensions of the tank? Is it for fresh or marine?

Personally i think 2ft high is plenty. Better for maintenance, better chance of getting oxygen circulating to the bottom of the tank, 3x3x2 will look thin (front to back).

Is this to fit in to a particular spot?
What fish were you thinking of?

Angel fish spring to mind for a deep thank. Maybe some rummynose and hatchetfish for the top.
Floating plants with long roots would be a nice addition.

 You would think it was my tank.

Mulm build up on the bottom is the biggest problem i have.
I can clean the glass with pads on small poles.

Good circulation around the bottom would be needed to keep it clean and healthy.

I still think 2ft would be better to maintain and look better.

crikey, 3foot deep?! i'm going mad trying to come up with ideas for a new setup when i sell off my lot, as yet i have no ideas what to go in that'll hang out near the top unless i keephold of the archer fish!

stick to 2 foot, you can always build a higher stand to keep it up at eye level and will allow more storage space for externals or a decent sized sump to give better filtration and more water (therfore allowance for more fish up top) and if your fish eithe hang bottom or middle you are not left with huge spaces in the water column

i hear you on that mate! had a 40l, got bored, got 4footer, wanted something different, got 2x 100litre 2&1/2 footers!

now they are going up for sale, but the 4footer is getting a big overhaul and staying. just different this time...

although if (and when) i get bored of that, i'll see about getting a 7or8footer built where the other tanks were. then get divorced!
its not just a hobby, its a sickness
