Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Took a air box filter,
Couple of pebbles in the end for weight,
Layer of fillterfloss,

Layer of peat balls,
And then another layer of fillterfloss,

Hope to keep the ph down in a breeding tank

Small air-driven filters are great for peat.
(In fact, these small air-driven filters are not bad at all really)

Yes I would connect it to an air pump,
Never tried this myself before its just a trial to see if it's any use,
Alternatively you can use a small net bag with peat pellets in a internal filter!
I use one in my 180ltr tank with pretty steady ph of 6.5,
That's with using only rainwater!

or you can buy 100liter bag of irish peat for about 8 quid and have enough to last a couple of years!

Sounds good,
Have you used it yourself? Is it aquarium safe?
If so can you give us a brand name a where one could pick it up?

Just make sure it doesn't have fertiliser, chalk, or wetting agents.....just pure peat.

The further from the road and the deeper you dig, the more likely you are to get a better result.

What I presently use for air-driven peat filtration is one of these....

www.jbl.de/en/aquatics-freshwater-produc...-mini-cristalprofi-i

(the JBL tormec CPi Mini filter insert)

They cost about 5 or 6 euro and come complete with the peat and the filter (all for 5 euro !!).

With a bit of jiggery......I make a compact filter floss plug for the bottom end, and then secure an air-line through the plug OR simply drop an air-line with air-stone down the top of the uplift tube.

Works very well and cheaper than the usual empty internal box filters.

(I also do the same with TorMec CPi inserts........and you can mix and match media).

You mean you want me to do some extra work to take a photo and then load it to photobucket. :D...phew, I don't get paid for that.

I'll have to mock-up a photo as the tanks having such filtration cannot be photographed (as I could simply take a photo of a glass of black coffee instead !!).

@Ian OK a bit much of me to expect a picture. I type faster than I think and that isn't that fast.

Just let me know if I am understanding you.

Get the pre filled filter, insert air hose through top and pack with floss and turn on the air.

Do I need to do anything with the bottom?

I have some eheim peat in an internal filter but it is very small probably off a 30L.

Thanks
