Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hi all,
i'm putting in a stove in room and my aquarium is butted up against the chimney breast, the guy who is installing it was a little concerned about the heat being too much for the tank, its a 430lt tank, what do you think guys could this be an issue, if so its a real bummer as placeing the tank anywhere else in house will be a 2nd best option for viewing.

appreciate any info,
T

i would say the temp would be up and down and you wont be able to regulate it
you might be able to put a fire board or fire break between the chimney and the tank
ask the stove shop about the fire board

I have a stove beside my RIO 400 and before that in its place I had a RIO 200 with no adverse effects.

There maybe a small increase in temperature maybe a dergree or so.

The stove I have is a wood burning stand alone stove ie there is no chimney breast, the flue goes out behind and up the wall externally. Its approx .75m away from the tank. Its generally not burning during the day except maybe at weekends. It is on full draught for a number of hourse each evening/night, so it does get quite hot.

I'd say unless you were burning it hard 24/7 there should not be any adverse affect.

cheers, yeah the guy that came to measure up mentioned building regulations and 2 ft being the min distance from stove to wood (i.e te cabinet), then yesterday he mentioned fire board and that it might be a solution ratehr than moving the tank,
I think the water shoudl be ok , i guess i'll know soon enough if its not,

( fire board is that like a plasterboard with one side pink and can be plastered?)

thanks

There are different types of Fire line board, the one I've seen is a bit like a sheet of ply, comes in different thickness. It is a fire stop as opposed the heat stop, although I'm sure it will stop some heat transfer. A sheet of ridgid insulation board would be a better heat transfer stop. Both of these you can attach a sheet of plasterboard too. Kingspan do an composite insulated plasterboard sheets which comes in all types of thicknesses ranging from about 32mm thick to 100mm and more which is your best bet.

Hope this is of some help.
