Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

As above i am thinking of making a 17 inch cube tank from some leftover glass from my last project
what's your thoughts filtration should i go with a sump or small internal filter ? what light would i need ?
has anyone got a tank of the same
size for ideas. This tank is for the other half so must be perfect

There was a time that 18" cube tanks were 'the' tanks for Discus breeding, I still have a couple and also one which is something like 18"x18"x22" deep which developed a leak and was dismantled pending a rebuild. I used to keep some small Angels in it as a 'growout' tank before it started to deposit its liquid content on the computer-room floor.
I also have a 22" cube tank (which might actually be 23" cube) which contains my Bengal Blue Snakeheads. They've grown to the sort of size now where they're a bit less tolerant of one another, but so far it's just posturing.
For what it's worth I think you might be 'over-egging the pudding' to use a sump, but probably others will feel different. I guess it all depends on what inmates herself would like in her tank (if memory serves me right Catherine likes Angels? The tank would, even with a substantial-sized sump, be too small for an adult pair of Oscars, but would be OK to grow them until the inevitable differences-of-opinion start up. You would need to build a hood/cover for it, possibly 2x15" light units would be sufficient - or you could look into using the LED options so well-described by Bart but you would, I reckon, be able to get by with two - or even (at a pinch) one unit.
Maybe you might think of starting up a planted tank - that would be a nice size - with a reasonable depth for some plants - but, of course, the final choice would be that of the two of you - these are mere suggestions, doubtless others will be able to make other suggestions also.
It will be interesting to see what you finally decide on.

John

yes john you're correct catherine likes the angles but this time she wants lots of neon tetras and guppies.
i never tried a planted tank so i think now is the right time. My plan was to use a glass cover with enough room
each side for the wire for the heater and maybe a air tube. i like the idea of a led light i also want to add some wood into the tank.
and give it a natural look. hopefully i get enough ideas to start the build before the weekend.
