Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Good evening fish keepers

I have a dilemma still in an apartment at the moment so limited to how many tanks I can keep.

But the burning desire for my tanks and more fish won't go away

I have a zebra pleco In a 120 litre tank it's on the ground in the hall of my apartment it isn't doing the fish justice being in s tank on the ground.

I was thinking of chanceing by arm with the wife and getting a little 2 tier rack so I can keep an extra 100 litre aswell has anyone recently built one or bought one somewhere doesn't have to be anything fancie just something neat and tidy.

I would like to hear of people's ideas and suggestions please

Would think any good metal workshop could make up to your specifications would sudjest you get it power coated as the finish is better than painting and it last longer . I used a guy that mostly makes garden gates to make me up some Japanese style iron work for around my pond did a great job at a great price. Where are you based ?

i've built a DIY stand similar to this as well as a huge rack only with timber.
It's very easy once you know how to calculate what you need.
You are welcome to visit me (in Drimnagh) and i will show you what I did, and we can sit down and calculate exactly what you need to get if you were to assemble it yourself. B&Q cut wood to specifications so I go there with a detailed cut sheet and the cut it all for me. Then it's pretty much like LEGO with screws :)

have a look a the racks sold in the coop superstores, i have 2, the 4ft ones cost 55-60 euros and the max shelf load is 250 kg. as the metal stiles come in 2 parts you could use it as a small 2 tier racking.
I made a wooden one too but it cost me more in materials than buying the metal one.

Quick update I have started the planning for this project I have decided to go for a wooden stand a friend of mine is a carpenter.

I have a jewul reckord 800 and having the rack built around the idea of having 2 tanks on the rack I reckon I will come across another fairly handy seems to be a popular tank.

But I am woundering would it be better to get some LED lighting strips and place them over each tank for lighting and then I was thinking would a big sponge filter be enough filtration for a 110 litre tank so I could run both tanks off an air pump.

All tips or advice most welcome here lads not in a rush to get it done just going to tip along till its completed.

Craig

No i used whatever cheap second hand tanks i could find and sometimes took them apart and got the glazier to cut the glass, still cheaper than getting new glass cut to size.
The lighting i use are led bars connected to each other, the 4 ft ones are 22 euros each and powefull enough to gtow mosses and easy plants.
I use 2 hailea air pump to run the air filters and UGF.
