			Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

HI I was just wondering if anyone has used drift wood from the beach in a freshwater aquarium. What is the best way to clean it and remove salt etc. Any input would be appreciated.

				Hi Nessa,
boil it once twice three times
then allow to soak for a few days
keeping wet at all times
where it won't be noticed take a shaving of just to ensure it has not been treated it may have be removed from the surface but not within. if it passes alL this then should be safe!

driftwood floats obviously.you may have to weigh it down in the
tank for some time before it sinks.

the advice above is spot on boil it a few times i'd go even so far as to say at least 6-8 times changing the water each time..the salt should dissolve and leech out from the wood plus so will any remaining tannins ( they turn the water tea coloured. then i would use a water treatment like easylife or some such conditioner in a bucket and soak the wood for at least another forthnight changing the water each day and retreating the water to be sure its clean... generally when the water runs clear from the bucket it should be ok but test it anyway to be sure

thanks for that advice. I will start the pot boiling. One other question. One of teh pieces is quite big and wont fit into a pot any suggestions about this one. I was trying to get hold of an old tin bath or oil drum to boil it in but thats not really a runner. I might just have to soak it for longer or boil a bit and then turn it over.
Anyway thanks for the replies.

				Hi Goldy,
If 1/2 of the drift wood can fit in the pot, I'd boil it a while and then turn it around to get the other half. That's what I did with the wood I have in my tank

Talk soon
