Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

ok i was hell bent on making one using the oul styrofoam, a bit of carving and cementing it. but after a bit of study i came to the conclusion that this is gonna steal not just a major space in my tank which i don't really mind but it's also going to steal a large volume of water, i could lose 15-20% of one but not the other, which brings me to the idea of some sort of fiberglass set up. any one any info on how i'd go about this? maybe some links, costs etc..........

I have seen backgrounds before that look really well great depth that hide all the filtration behind it and you don't lose allot of water capacity ill try find a picture cause its hard to explain.

If you got some perspex and a 1 inch sheet of styrofoam you could make something nice and not lose much space. The perspex would stick to the back to give it extra support and you could move the whole thing maybe 3 inches from the back wall. the display area would lose 3 inch + 1 inch material but you can hide filtration and heating in the back.

Heres a video of what i mean, i think it makes the whole thing look tidy. I have a cement background but the heater and filter really take away from the look of it.

i made a carved background then applied a thin coat(well 1/4 inch in total) of concrete to it. used epoxyresin to seal it. then removed most of the styrofone(sp) from the inside concreted it again then epoxied the inside to seal all the concrete in. its been in my tank (4foot) for well over 2 yrs and all you see is the spray bar as everything else is hidden in the back. one thing i will say is to get a powerhead in the back to distribute the heat into the main area of the tank
