Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Tank hood was created by Georgia (Georgia)
Hey so I have the condensation plastic lids for the tank but I would love to someday have lights and the light hoods as well. My tanks are 2ftx1ft x2 tanks. I cannot afford €90 each (with a light). I just do not have the money to do that. This is the main reason why my tanks live in a table in front of the window. They enjoy having light to much, when I took them away from it they got very listless.

So at first I was thinking of wood but hey water + wood = not a long life. Unless of course I varnish the wood but I am afraid that the varnish could have ill effects on my fish.
Some form of stainless steal but then again I don't think I can get my hands on a torch to seal them together.

Plastic kinda goes out the window I thought but I could probably get some pieces together and then use a hot plate to seal them together.

Hmm many ideas but I thought I would see if anyone has some better ideas on how to make the hood. I don't need anything fancy to be honest.

Thank you for any help :)

Btw I may be a girl but I have been working with steel since I was 8, only thing is I moved and have no welder *sigh*

Hi G,

Your Tank sizes are pretty normal, I'd bet there are sponsors and lfs that have received broken Tanks with the lids intact, Try calling around to see what's out there.

I use a plastic hinge to connect two pieces of Glass together www.wotaquarium.com/aquarium-fish-tank-s...nd%20Canopies/0.html I place my Leds straight onto the Glass and it works a dream

Hi
Back when I had a lot of tanks and we used to make our own my brother used to make wooden cabinets for the tanks complete with lids and we bought fluorescent lights.
We varnished the wood with a clear varnish and left it a week or two before setting up the tank in it.
It was cheap but looked good.
No ill effects on the fish. Just make sure you leave te varnish to dry long enough.Or alternatively wax the wood.

You could always paint or spraypaint the wood ?
How about making it from perspex and gluing it together ?
Unfortunately I just rehomed a tank & lid of that size only yesterday.
I'll check if theres anything else suitable (2' x 1', L x W)

I don't have a hood on its own. Only a Juwel Reckord 600 including stand.
Open to offers.
