Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Been a very busy day 24h ago I didn't know the first thing about fry or a cichlids holding.

My first question is what should I get to feed the fry I crushed some tropical flake and they are eating it.
The mother was taking the cichlids into her mouth so I now have two holding tanks will the fry be ok in a holding tank by them selves

How long will I keep them in a holding tank ? I have no filter for a new tank setup.
She had another 6 last night so I think there is near 20 now and only 1 died out of all the fry.
I will post a video soon

if you have an airpump you could get a cheap sponge filter for about a tenner. ideal for fry tanks

Yes I have a small air pump
how do they work I was looking at them on the Internet.
I am going to get a 90L tank setup hopefully during the week.
I keep a eye out for a smaller tank it would come in handy now.

Or, failing that be very vigilant and try to syphon out all the uneaten food and any 'waste' which comes from the fry (which shouldn't be a great deal to start with) and - obviously - replace the removed water with treated new water.
A bit elementary, I realise, but something often overlooked.

Here is a photo before she had her fry I been looking at some photos and I don't see many with the black on the fin.
Is she a mix breed ? How long can I hold the fry in the small plastic tank would I be better mining them into the net and letting the mother back into the main tank?

I personally am not very knowledgeable when it comes to African Cichlids so would not be able to advise on the fry - do you have a male of the same species? - I know hybrids aren't uncommon though.
I wouldn't be in too much of a hurry to return the female as the minute she goes back she'll become the 'centre of attention' and may not be strong enough after having fasted for the period she was holding eggs and fry. I would recommend seven to ten days to let her renew her energies before returning her.

Can anyone add to this for ZX10R?

Hi,if she has being eating for a couple of days now then i would but her back into the main tank now.......Everyone is different but what i do is put them back in when i'm feeding the others as they get so distracted by food that they forget she has being missing for a couple of days and all should be fine again.
The fry will be grand in that small tank for another week or two but you will need to set up a tank of maybe 30-50L to move them into then.If you think you will not be able to raise these now then just release them into the main tank now and let nature do it's thing, and she will be holding again soon so maybe next time you will be better prepared for this.
I can't give you a proper ID on her either but i will say it's definately not a Labidochromis caeruleus but could be Pseudotropheus saulosi......The male of which would be bright blue with darker blue stripes on the body and dark fins.

I'm sure there's someone on here who could give you a 100% ID on her?

Day 3
My female is feeding very well and will be released this evening back into my main tank, I will do it when the rest are feeding.
All the fry are doing great and I can see them feeding very well and getting bigger by the minute.
I also re-sealed a tank from a few months ago and its holding most water apart from a very small trickle.
Hopefully I sort that later.
New home for my fry 90l clear-seal tank

I just had a look at this post and the pics and video and will try to answer your questions.
The female is a yellow lab type and her fry should be born yellow, so the fry in pic (if hers) are hybrids and therefore will have no sell on value.
The female in the small container looks to be very distressed and it is also very stressful for females to be continuously mouthbrooding as they fast for 3 weeks and would require at least 2 to 3 weeks recovery time post release.
After spawning all Malawian cichlids brood for at least 3 weeks and are best left in the main tank where they will hide away. If you want to save the fry, at about 20 days, remove the female to a small tank where she will release them and is unlikely to harm them for a week or so.

30 tanks specialise in african cichlids, angelfish and various catfish
