Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Just noticed that my Transcriptus have bred in my mixed Tang/Malawi tank.

I've only seen about 3 or 4 fry as the parents are defending their dark little pit at the back of a bunch of rocks like mad.

I've seen my large male Tetracanthus try to get a snack or two so i reckon there isn'y many fry, on a plus note the fry i've seen are a fairly decent size, like the size Mollys are when they are just born.

What are the chances of any fry surviving in the tank? Any relevent info appreciated.

Cheers, Peter.

I had a pair from the same batch yours are from.Invest in a few barnacle shells from Gerry Evans. The fry survival rate should approach 50% if they can roam but in a safe haven.
Besides being eaten I think the main problem is getting food to them.Use a long narrow plastic tube and aim it into their pit.I used crushed brine shrimp pellets.

Congratulations. You should write an article on how to breed these beauties.

The fry you mention could be as old as a couple months, as the fry start off very tiny and are kept out of sight by the parents for ages esp. in a community set up. Transcriptus are quite small and would struggle to guard young against such as tetracanthus, but they will certainly try, and chris's idea with the shells would help. I have had the much larger marlieri and regani raise fry in a mixed tank.
keep us posted on their progress.

Thanks for the replies Derek and Chris.

Quick update:

I've seen 5 fry at once so i'm hopeful that there are a few more. The parents are doing a great job defending them and ushering them around there little cave. I've helped them by blocking up their cave a little more so that the Tetracanthus has more limited access, it seems to have done the trick.

Luckily for me the cave/pit is in the corner of the tank so i can get a great view of how they are doing. The fry are small striped little beauties.

As for feeding, the fry are eating flake and some really small spectrum pellets. I'm amazed at how big they are so i reckon Derek is spot on saying that they are about a month old.

Another note is that the fry also have the safety of the black juwel background to hide in so when an imposter comes into their area they have additional refuge.

Will keep you all updated.

Peter
