Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Well Im finally getting around to doing up the study room and once painted Ive the 160 litre tank ready to go. Question is what will I fill it with. (Dont suggest water any of you smartypants!). Ive been thinking for ages what fish to go with this time,I already have the community tank so tempted to try something different. Ideally I want colour. I went to my LFS today and saw some beautiful Cichlids. I was taken by the German Ram and indeed the Bolivan ram. Im a beginner to tropical fish still and certainly a beginner to Cichlids. So Im hoping for all of you more experienced folk out there to offer some friendly advise.
What type cichlids can I keep in a 160 litre tank, would I need rocks etc..
Im quite excited at starting up the tank again but want to research loads first before I decide what to stock it etc... Herself wont let me have another tank after this one so I need to get this one right!!
I understand the hardness of the water and Ph will play a factor also Im guessing?

Of course, finally Im not 100% set on cichlids and indeed if some members here feel it may be abit soon to be getting into them, I wont be offended one bit. So hence the alternative, anyone else got a suggestion of stocking the 160 litre, Ive taken a shine to angels too!!
Looking forward to seeing what people have to say on this one. Im taking the easy option and hoping someone can recommend something!

Hi, you are fairly limited by the tank size as to what you can keep.
Its too small for Malawis but you could get some nice Tangs if your water is hard enough
Julies, llelupi, brichardi etc. Plenty of rocks and a high ph required.

If your water is soft then you could look at rams, apistogramma species and the likes (not well up on them to be honest) but there are some stunning colours available.

Angels would be Ok in that size but they need a tall tank, as far as I know they like 18 inches or so.

ideally 7.5 upwards but if your tap water is coming out at that ph using coral sand as a substrate should bring it to above the 7.5 limit and then your laughing, tanganyikan cichlids can be stunning, leluipi's, lamp. brevis, julieochromis, neolamp. brichardi all stunning, and easy to get a hold of a few small groups of each and you will have a lovely cichlid tank
