Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Yellow Lab Holding Fry, What to do?

I'm not sure what to do. My female is holding fry and i haven't a clue what to do. I had a small 60L but is now housing my girlfriends new dragon, so I won't get it back until I build a vivarium, I have a small holding tank which sits inside the main tank. Do I just hope they will be ok or do I try and strip her into the holding tank. They look fairly big in her mouth.

Depends on what else is in the tank..

If they are likely to be eaten then best thing to do is get one of the floating plastic fry traps & strip the fry into this.

Don't get the mesh type as if there are larger fish present outside the net they will crush the fry by trying to bite them through the mesh.

Thanks 2poc, I stripped her this evening, to say i was nervous would be a gross understatement, all fingers and thumbs but I got it done, any advice as to where I should go from here? the fry are in a small plastic floating tank within the main tank.

Good stuff - now that you've done it you will be fine doing it the next time as once they start they don't stop....

The fry will be fine eating crushed flake (crushed as small as you can)

Try to feed them a few times a day

Don't let the water in the fry trap get stagnant, if you notice an oily film on top make sure you circulate the water over it.

The key thing with growing fry is good water so keep up the weekly water changes.

The mother fish will be starving after holding, great if you can seperate her to look after her but not always practical. Just try & make sure she gets her fair share at feeding time.

Congratulations!!

Thanks 2poc, I crushed the food like you said and the fry seem to love it. They all seem to be doing great
