Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Jewel cichlids

My friend has agreed to give me her heavily neglegted Jewel cichlids.
(she is giving me her tank too:silly: :silly:  )
I think the tank they are in is too small (but I'll find a use for it:laugh: don't worry)
My question now is, would they work in my 180 liter tank, the other inhabitants are, 3 kribs 1m 2f, 6 pepper cory, 3 cory trillinateus,
6 odessa barbs and one unhappy 3 spot gourami ( the kribensis fry will hopefully be gone out of the tank by the time I would transfer these jewels)
All advice welcome please

Jewel Cichlids, while being very colourful can be quite a handful...even in a much larger tank than yours.

Of course there are always exceptions to every rule but I would suspect putting them in with your existing tank inhabiatants will spell disaster!

They are, especially when the reproductive urge comes upon them, very intolerant of other fish - especially other smaller Cichlids. I know Kribs can be also but they're not in the same league, at least the ones I've kept down the years aren't.
I once had a pair with fry keep a fully grown pair of Oscars hemmed into one corner...until, that is, the Oscars had had enough - then all the fry were gone and the parent Jewels were 'no more'...but this does show how aggressive they (the Jewel Cichlids) can be towards other fish - even the size of fully-grown Oscars!

For what it's worth, my suggestion would be for you to keep them alone in their own tank - if it does come with the Jewels, that is...

But putting them in with your existing stock sounds a real recipe for heartache.

Sorry to be the bringer of such bad tidings, but you did ask for opinions, well advice.

and your advice is very much appreciated, I was just worried the tank they are in is too small (can't be much bigger than 60L), but seen as they are used to it, or they should be at this stage, they can stay in there anyhoew thanks a mill:laugh:

Just so long as they are OK with one another - I often kept a pair of Jewels in a 2ft tank and they were fine, but always as pairs.

Try to keep up a steady regime of gravel cleaning and water changes and, whatever you do, try not to overfeed them, they're greedy little lads who would like as not try to eat as much as you put in for them!
I used to feed them on chopped (but not too finely) frozen peeled Prawns - this was a good food, I found - and still do - because any uneaten pieces can much more easily be removed than some of the more 'mushy' fish foods.

They're great characters too. You'll love them, I'm sure.

I feed my Oscars on frozen peeled prawns and they nearly take my fingers off getting to them; they love them.

The tank size does sound small but you should get away with it if you change the water regularly and, importantly, gravel vac weekly as they are messy fish.

Good luck.
