Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

been a while since I posted,

I did my 2 weekly clean today but this time I removed all the rocks to make it easier when cleaning and spotted 2 baby fish(about 10mm).

I didnt even know my fish were that friendly with each other :P, nor dod I realise one was carrying

I dont have a second tank to put the littl'ns into, so what are their chances of surviving + what can I do to help them survive(food, etc)

it is a tank with malawi chiclids

thanks

Just put all the rocks back in and ensure there are plenty of nooks and crannys that the big fish cant get into. some may survive to adulthood. Dont worry about food they will eat the crumbs of the bigger fishes food

Thing is that they are quite possibly hybrids in a mixed tank which is not good...

Well the risk in a mixed tank is that the dominant male wil mate with any of the females regardless of species.

Breeding & distributing hybrids is a big no no.
If everyone started doing this then the whole hobby is ruined as you no longer know what breed is what. The whole gene pool is messed up..

Its fine if you're going to keep them yourself & never breed them or trade them to anyone else. Of course there are no laws, you're absolutely entitled to do what you want but among cichlid keepers this is like an unwitten rule.

I keep a mixed tank but generally only strip fry from females if I'm 100% sure of their lineage..

If you dont intend on passing on the fry or selling them on then it should be fine Dolf, while you may not plan on doing that now, its worth bearing in mind that in time you may have too many fry and will need to offload them. You will need to cull them or else get a second tank. Dont ever pass on dilutted genes to another fishkeeper. Otherwise well done on your fry :)

It's possible they are hybrids, but I wouldn't say it's highly likely. I also have a big community tank with a lot of breeding going on. There is only one batch of fry which I suspect may be hybrids. As was said, better not to breed from them or pass that on. Leave that to the Czechs;)

Regards,

Ken.

Hy,
If and i meen if we get any good stock,we should keep it "clean"-get enough hybrids in as it is.I agree fully with Ken on the czechs-hard to make males and females out with all the hybrids and hormons.Enjoy your juveniles but only sell them on when they are pure,in the interest of all of us.Regards,Tim
