Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hey guys,

recently got back into Malawi's after a long absence from them, as well as sticking with my Tangayikans and was just looking for some advise re the combo i have got at the moment:) .. we're talking about an 74 gallon tank (340 litres) with the following selection... all are very small juveniles with the largest about 4cm smallest just 1cm so here it goes..the below are maybe 120 fry in total

Otopharanx Lithobates black/gold,
Ps. Saulosi,
Ps. Flavus,
Lab. Careleous,
Ps. Acei black,
Lab. Trewavasae Mpanga,
Ps. Acei Blue,
Lab. sp. Hongi,
Ps. Maylandia zebra,
Metriaclima Pyrsonotos
and what looks like Metraclima sp. Orange bolch.

Now I realise they will be quite over stocked when mature but I will only be raising these only to a size I can sex them at, then selling on the rest of the stock and I haope to have maybe 1 males 5 females of each and then separate the ps. species into seperate tanks to prevent cross breeding and the labs into other tanks for the same reason..

so should these be ok to get to that size without knocking hell out of each other or who should i be wary of

Thanks for all the input
Seamus :) ;)

they are all ok together while young, but the strict herbivores are very teritorial when mature. with this mix the otos and careleus plus the salousi and acci females would suffer stress but the acci and salousi males would cope better with the others which are all in the mid to higher category of aggression. i have previously kept and bred flavus various trewavasae variants, hongi and zebra variants but found them to be tough and high maintenance. (females are run ragged)
having said that i have no doubt with your expertise and extra tanks that you will have no real bother. just keep them packed.

once again derek your expertise is invaluable, will follow your advise and hopefully in the future i'll have my own tank of fry from my fish... What would you suggest as a mix with the oto's, sauloisi, acei, and yellow labs.. Thanks again Seamus

any of the following are reasonably easy going and less teritorial.
smaller haps/aulonacaras, sprengerae, lab. chisimulu or mel joanjohnsonae (a really nice fish, often overlooked)
lab. pearlmut. or even pseud ornatus or kingsizea. (small species)
