Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Replied by scubadim (scubadim) on topic Re:Golden Ram
Hi Patty,

Normally female rams, gold or blue, would have a pinkish coloration on the belly and mature males have longer first rays on their dorsal fin.
Saying this,i find it a bit more difficult to define sexes on these fish lately.
Their shape and coloration are a little(or a lot)altered from the original.
Hope this helps.
Dimitri.

Dimitri hit the nail on the head there, the pinkish tinge on the belly is the best indicator but depends on the colouring whether it shows up,esp if they are stressed. They are wonderful fish I must say, quite demanding on water quality also but they will repay you with a lovely colour. It can take a few weeks for them to colour up fully but a good food diet is half the battle.

Here is a pic of two I had. You can see the difference despite the poor photo quality! The female is on top with a pink tinge on her stomach area.

thanks guys...
im thinking i have 3 males...
as i cannot see any pink on the one i thought was a female and
s/he's fins are not as pointy as the new one but
and her 2 front fins underneath arent as pointy
is that another tell tale sign??
as im writing this the 3 of them are goin head to head with each other..
ive never seen so much colour in my blue one!!!
hes like a different fish...
and my new golden one has got a lot more colour and confidence and wont leave my other golden one alone..
i feed them flakes and pellets and frozen cichlid food twice a week and some peas :)
i do bout 15% water change every week!!
if you check out my profile pic of my golden ram
maybe use can tell me if its a boy or girl???
this is the one i thought was a girl :)

Profile pic abit hard to tell but looks like a male to me. Also the colouring could indicate the males trying to establish a pecking order amongst themselves. When you say the other ram wont leave another golden ram alone.Do you mean chasing him/her or indeed just following her and displaying?
