crushed coral sand the fine stuff
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

hi guys have a tank for my frontosa s set up a few months but used the crushed coral sand the real fine stuff and in my opion it is a total mess the water is always cloudy and have two filters on it any bit of movement even from the fish at it disturbs the sand and its like a bleeding sand storm also gets very horrible so easy it looks more like the stuff you plaster a wall with in places washed it out for about a hour before putting it in the tank as i knew it was fine stuff but totally unhappy with it my hole natural looking set up is ruined from it has any one ever used this sand before or any one had any problems with it

i use the stuff and have no probs, took a lot of rinsing to get the really fine stuff out which causes the cloudyness, but perfect since

how long did it take for the cloudy ness to go in your tank i wounder if its a case of me having to much sand in the tank like sand in my tanks to be deep would that affect the actual sand neat ness and stuff

no cloudiness cause i rinsed it till it ran clear, you can buy a filter aid that clumps fine particles together so your filter can take it out but i feel its an unneccessary expense if a damn good rinsing is given... but i presume you dont want to strip it down so try the filter aid

well its funny you say that was thinking of striping it down and opting for a thicker grade coral sand

no need for thicker grade just rinse and rinse and rinse till it runs clear

thought i had risened properlly it looked pretty clear to me just put the sand in a big 70 litre bucket and put the hose in it and let it run through it for a hour or so going to have to do some thing really looks terrible its not doing my fonts any justice being in a what just looks to be a messy tank

use a fine sieve, do small portions at a time and you'll see how much dust is in it needs a lot of agitation to clear it but worth it in the end
