Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Cichlid fry.. Little help, my first time. was created by Alex (Alex)
I came home today n i saw a big cloud of debris floating around, take a second look, oh its a bunch of around 200 fry. They are fry from my African Butterfly Cichlids, iv removed a good bunch of them and put them in my 40 L, The parents are doing a good job of protecting them but they are also eating them  thats normal for first time right?

Iv got food to feed the fry,, but i read they live of micro organisms for a while.. The 40L is planted and quite a bit of algae growing,,, I only use it for fry.

When should i start feeding them and how often?

Id say i have around 50 fry or so.

ty for any info.

another method is armetia (brineshrimp) or infurosia ( made by putting a par boiled potatoe in tank water in a jar on the window when it becomes cloudy thats the infurosia, pour a little in the tank and top up with fresh water, grows quickly but may be a little late to try for your fry), another methos of feeding them is hard boiled egg yolk in a bit of ladies tights dampened and sueezed into the tank... but this can lead to pollution if daily water changes where avoided imo... best of luck with them

Im gonna leave the ones i caught back in the main tank, The parents aren't eating them,, just gobbling up any that leave the group n spitting them out again. I dont have space for them at the mo if i did successfully raise them. Im sure there will be other spawns. Im not to sure if there Butterfly cichlids.. They have a black dot under there eye and near the tail and are covered with blue speckles... but they look a bit diff from any pics iv seen on google. Ill try put up pic at some stage. They are around 4-5"... they were called emerald green cichlids in the shop..?

Jewel cichlids by the sounds of them, very prolific breeders

Stunning looking fish too, supposed to be very aggressive when breeding

Oh, TY. Yeah they are Jewel Cichlids :)! , Its a 800L tank so they have the space,,, and they defend there fry very well and are very aggressive. They even chase away my firemouths and green Terror who used to boos em around a bit , and my 13" bala shark. I thinking of selling my 70L and 40L and other stuff and getting 150-200L over summer,, Give them there own tank to raise fry. I'm getting bored of raising guppy fry:laugh: !
