Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hard to pick a favourite Mick. If you are looking for an African Cichlid tank you have a whole myriad of choices. The thing about cichlids, especially the African cichlids, is that you really need to research each fish and find out who will get on with who. They are all a bit aggressive, but the can show their aggression in different ways and towards different fish. You could have ten people respond here and tell you a different favourite, but if you put them all in the same tank you could end up with one after a few weeks.

Personally, I like Demasoni. Small mbuna from Malawi, but notorious for destroying the hell out of others of their own kind. Even a single demasoni in a full tank is fun to watch, they're little bullies and will take on any of their tank mates, but on their own they don't feel too threatened. Against their own kind though they don't stop - they fight until the other is dead.

Id have t agree with that, Demasoni are one of my favourites too, theyre non stop action i can watch mine for hours. Most african cichlids are very active an fun t watch i personally love mbuna. The best thing i find about them is when they start to breed, its just really interestin watchin mouth brooders do their thing. I have a yellow lab holding at the moment, i put her in her own small tank just so she isnt bothered by the others, its been 10 days now and you can see little eyes peepin out of her mouth. Id definately recommend some sort of mouth brooder!

If I had a big empty tank at the moment I would look for some Madagascar cichlids - P. polleni. I'd keep just a pair of these beauts. They are large character fish, similar to oscars but much nicer looking:

How are you finding the buttikoferi? I believe they are headbangers. I've been tempted a few times to buy a juvenile and see what they're like.

If you or anybody else is interested in ordering some Polleni give me a shout as I will have a spare tank soon & Drew from AV can get them but only if a box is ordered.

Hi,
Like the others already said, there are so many ways to go with the Africans. From the small ,very active shellies to the majestic, large and quiet Frontosas or Malawi community setups. My personal favourite is the Blue Zaire.

Midlands - in the heart of Ireland.

Keeping and breeding : Frontosa Blue Zaires , Synodontis Petricola , Tropheus Red Rainbow (Kasanga) , Tropheus Moliro . Regulary fry for sale.
Community tank with P.Kribensis and different livebearers.
