Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Can any one help me out here
I'm hopefully picking up a Trigon 350 at the weekend and want and idea of what I can put in it to get it set up.
I was interested in getting a JD and 3-5 convicts and jewels. Feedback from here would suggest that this wouldnt be a great idea.
How about swap the jewels for firemouths?
Any suggestions?

I don't see much of a problem with your existing stocklist if that's what you're into?
The Jewels are African rather than CA as per the others but all like similar water params and are equally tough with regard to aggression.
Both convicts and jewels are prolific breeders though and get especially aggressive when breeding. Fry from both will be hard to shift and they will produce large numbers.
What attributes of these fishattract you to them and maybe we can suggest alternatives that won't be a pain later on?
Cheers
Patrick

I would like something active and colourful. Would also like to see some breeding (and let nature take its course ie a low survival rate in a mixed tank)
I've seen these fish in the LFS but wouldnt have much experience with the other types.

Are you attracted specifically to central American cichlids or have you considered African cichlids as an alternative?
IMO Mbuna fit the bill for exactly what you are looking for & would be worth researching. The array of colours in mbuna is amazing, easy to breed and not difficult to get rid of fry. You could fit plenty of fish in that Trigon 350 too.

I have a pair of Jewels and they defend up to a 250- 300L area of my tank and are very aggressive.. (i dont think a breeding pair of jewels would be suitable for your tank if you want to add other cichlids). every few weeks i have hundreds of babies.. Usually the fry only last 5 days (i have other big cichlids in the tank. The pair are pretty big now and a still have 5 fry which have doubled in size since there last spawn nearly 2 weeks ago...
Jewels should be fine in your tank as long as you dont end up with a pair..

I'd suggest check out the mbuna profiles below, see what (if) you like and then go from there:
www.cichlid-forum.com/profiles/category.php?cat=2
Some can be hyper aggressive, some hard to source and others are incompatible but if you pick a few that catch your attention I'm sure we can come up with a stock list for you.

Just to confuse you even more

you could go for some geophagus,
some are nice and colourul and active, not too agressive either
and fun to watch.
