Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)

Hi,

John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.

I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.

With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.

I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.

If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.

I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.

I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.

Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Starting Over

So after losing all my fish I'm looking to start over.

Plan to give the tank a good clean during the week and possible clean the filter as well.

Looking to get some fish this weekend. I'd prefer something hardy and if possible cheap and build up from there.

The ph of the tank is around 8-8.2 so would need something suitable for that.

Any suggestions?

Will be looking out here for fry/juvenile fish to kick things off possible

Be very careful with cleaning your tank if you use something like bleach to disinfect it...rinse it very thoroughly with plenty of fresh water after.
Likewise with the filter - although you wouldn't be wanting to use bleach for that.
Has the filter been running in the 'fishless' tank all the time?
What I'm trying to say is that if you thoroughly clean the filter then re-fill the tank after cleaning it, it will like as not start the ammonia cycle up again, in which case you shouldn't be stocking with anything but a very few hardy Fish - you probably know the drill by now.
Sorry to sound disparaging, but there are no short cuts in my opinion - but others will doubtless have other opinions.

Ok, so you have a nice sized tank there. What fish interest you? If you want something tough but with lots of colour and plenty of energy you might want to consider the African Cichlids. Your ph is ideal for them. Theres many species to choose from and they can make a fantastic display. These are generally aggressive, and some species will not mix with others, especially if they look similar. Aggression can be reduced by overstocking or keeping an all male setup. Theres a few folks on here with huge experience keeping many different types so if that interests you, you will get plenty of advice. If that sounds like a lot of work, put some peat in the filter, a nice big piece of bogwood in the tank and get yourself a nice big ugly Oscar ;) . A Green Terror or Jack Dempsey would also like a tank like that :) . As John mentioned, make sure the groundwork is done. Theres some threads on here about sterillizing a tank, check the search box for them.

The thank has been up and running for about 8 weeks. I've had fish in it for about 5 weeks but when I came back from holidays they have all died.

By cleaning I meant doing something like a 50% water change and rinse out the filter.

I'm not going to be picky on fish. I want something that will go together and breed (would like to see this happen).
