RAMS PAIRING OFF
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

Hi guys I picked up my another blue ram last night , In purrfect pets longmile .
But Stephen was not there so I am not 100 percent sure that I got a female.
It has a pink / redish blush around its belly and dorsal fins seem to be rounded and not real protruding ones.
I introduced ( we will say her for now) her to the tank and the male was imediatley over to her and very interested. He was flashing and his colours were the best I have seen.
They are now still interested in each other but it seems to be the female chasing the male . They have been in a cave together with the male very interested in her underbelly.
But I am not to sure if they are fighting or flirting. The main behaviour seems to be the female chasing the male and havin a go and then the male has a go and they will then be side by side for a while and the go to seperate parts of the tank
How long would it normally take a couple to pair of and what would be the courting / pairing up behaviour.
I am very happy with both of the but ideally I want to get them to breed but I dont want to have to take one back to swap for a female.

The Male will display quite strongly....fins flared and swimming almost at an angle to her...really trying to impress her.The colours will also become more pronounced. Pairing can occur very quickly, esp if there are no other rams in the tank. I had a female in the tank once and I introduced a male one evening, the next morning there was eggs everywhere,it was amazing to see.
Keep an eye on them, what kind of substrate have you,and have you some smooth rocks ?

I have a sand substrate with some gravel in places , didn't get out to get stones some hope to get some this week.
They have paired off now as they are constantly with each other and not fighting at all . and they will rub up to each other every now and then.
On saturday night the females belly was scarlet red from a pink blush on friday would this have just been showning her colours or does this happen before laying .Yet on sunday
it was back to a paler pink blush . But I could not find and eggs . Although there seems to be a few little pits they dug.

Mine often do the pits, and it can be linked to their spawning I find, they often do it before laying, its not proven but it happens in mine also, but of course they lay on flat surfaces,so perhaps they do this to try and get flat surfaces, who knows.Either way its all normal behaviour, the pink spot doesnt really get any more bright in my experience,so thats not really a sign of when she is about to lay. Basically they will chase off other fish from the spot they decide upon, then they lay. Dont leave the eggs in complete darkness either as the other fish will eat the eggs.Leave a night light on so the parent can guard the eggs. The first spawn often ends in the parents minding them for a small while and then either eating them or getting very lax in minding and that results in other fish eating them or fungus etc..
Once they pair off though, you are half way there.you might also want to start preparing some baby brine shrimp if you intend on raising them, the yolk sac only lasts a few days.

thanks Gavin , got home last night and the female is being aggresive towards the male again and chasing him and having a little nip at him . Would this happen to your pair loved up one minute the next fighting ?
