is this sand ok for my tank
×
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

I've just got as bag of Glenview Horticultural grit.
Just read thats its good for a planted tank, but is too rough for anything that likes too rummage through the substrate.
The playsand is too fine and can cause toxic build ups
Glenview Paving Sand has been recommended
I'm going to try swap for this myself.

I have used this Glenview Play Sand myself but - although it's claimed to be 'ready washed' - don't believe a word of it!!! It really does take an awful lot of rinsing with loads of fresh water before you can use it!
I've been recommended to use the play sand from Early Learning Centre which - I'm assured - needs little or even no washing! Must be worth the extra cost.

ive used play sand before i find it works fine, if you dont have fish to agitate it you should run your fingers through it to avoid any toxic build up when your doing your water change.
there is also a silver sand you can get in homebase that i have in my geo tank which works well and its only 5euro for a 20kg bag,

Silver sand is used in an old aquarium book I have. It's mixed with coral sand (which I gather is to raise the ph or hardness ?)
I'll check that out in Homebase, tnx
Had the blinkers on looking for silica sand medium grade.

The cleanest Sand other than White Silica Sand is the Sand from The Early Learning Center, but apparantly, it's only seasonal because it's used in Children's Sand Pits.
It is a dawdle to wash, costs around 5.50 and the bag has a handle but it cuts the Hands off you.
All the others resemble fine builders Sand that contains a ton of mank in it, it takes an age to wash and has no guarantee of it's suitability for it's purpose.
It does NOT cause any toxic build up, toxic buildup is caused by the Aquarist putting too deep a bed of it in the Aquarium.
