Retirement and forum shutdown (17 Jan 2022)
Hi,
John Howell who has managed the forum for years is getting on and wishes to retire from the role of managing it.
Over the years, he has managed the forum through good days and bad days and he has always been fair.
He has managed to bring his passion for fish keeping to the forum and keep it going for so long.
I wish to thank John for his hard work in keeping the forum going.
With John wishing to "retire" from the role of managing the forum and the forum receiving very little traffic, I think we must agree that forum has come to a natural conclusion and it's time to put it to rest.
I am proposing that the forum be made read-only from March 2022 onwards and that no new users or content be created. The website is still registered for several more years, so the content will still be accessible but no new topics or replies will be allowed.
If there is interest from the ITFS or other fish keeping clubs, we may redirect traffic to them or to a Facebook group but will not actively manage it.
I'd like to thank everyone over the years who helped with forum, posted a reply, started a new topic, ask a question and helped a newbie in fish keeping. And thank you to the sponsors who helped us along the away. Hopefully it made the hobby stronger.
I'd especially like to thank John Howell and Valerie Rousseau for all of their contributions, without them the forum would have never been has successful.
Thank you
Darragh Sherwin

This is a new batch, not too many of them because when their parents spawned they were in this small 60l tank, but I'm happy, nice small batch

They are 4 weeks old, just separated from their parents yesterday. Breeding pair is now in their home tank, with 3 Pigeon Blood and some fish from the first batch...

I found one of your little red guys dead this morning..
Just on inspection he looked perfectly fine. Last night he was eating and swimming as usual. I was gutted. I know i have had nitrite readings lately and I have been using prime to reduce the toxicity and that tank is getting 2 water changes per day as I feed them beef heart and i like to syphon when they are done.
Did a 30% water change immediately after removing the dead fish.
I come back around 1PM to all my guys happy and swimming and excited as they know they will get some food (normal stuff). I give them a few pellets and start working on my computer. About 40 minutes later I see another one of the red ones (yours) laying down on the bottom and looking bad. In the panic I think nitrite so i take him out of the tank and put him with the babies as I know they don't have any nitrites (i do 3 PWC a day). 5 minutes later he looked better but 15 minutes later he was dead. The other fish in the tank looking fine. Then i look again and i see my little stunted one (who had been regaining colour lately) looking so so .... I put him in a separate container with his own tank water but i added fresh water to double the volume. Then changed 70-80 percent of the water and put back the dark one: they all seem ok.
I am really gutted as I have been very careful with changing water due to the messy nature of the beef heart. There was no loss of colour, no warning signs, nothing on the body showing any sign of illness... Lost 2 of your 3 fish in 12 hours ... and I was so proud of them... Only the bigger one remains.

I'm sorry and sad to hear that

I don't know what to tell you, something must be wrong if this has happend a few times since you started with discus, fish don't die for no reason, not that many and that often

Other fish in the tank are doing well?

Nitrites showed 1mg/l which is very high and I have been using PRIME to detoxify them at every water change. Been changing 30% of the water daily for last 3-4 weeks as I was feeding them beef heart in quantity and i was cleaning after in the morning and in the evening.
My other tank shows nitrites as well but the fish don't display any signs of bother. Also treated with PRIME. Actually one of the dark ones form the very beginning has cleared up quite a bit and you can see patterns on his body.
I cannot find any other explanation than nitrites..
Last night i setup a 260L bare bottom. And mounted an already running filter (i keep 2 on each tank). 0 nitrites and I put 4 fish in there including the survivor of the 3 i bought from you.
I will reduce food. And I believe the volume of water will help dilute any concentration of nitrites produced.
